Savannakhet is a provincial capital located along the Mekong River in Southern Laos. The city is connected to Thailand’s Mukdahan in the west via the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge. Travelers here can enjoy some magnificent natural beauty while taking in the local history and culture. Savannakhet Airport helps facilitate entry into the city, as a road trip from Vientiane take around 9 hours. If coming from Pakse, the travel time is about 5 hours.

As is the case in most cities, an excellent first stop when in Savannakhet is the Tourist Information Office. A map of the city and suggested itineraries can be valuable assets during your time here. Undoubtedly one of the top attractions of the city is the holy site known as That Ing Hang Stupa. It is especially important in December when many Buddhists travel to this holy site for the annual Boun Pha ceremony. Another ancient temple and host to annual events is Wat Xayaphoum. While going to check out these top sites, Old French colonial buildings set the scene, especially around the Catholic church and the central plaza. You might also see statues of dinosaurs throughout the city, inspiring a family-friendly trip to the Dinosaur Museum.
