Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve
Ras Al Jinz,Sur - View on map
"we loved our one night stay here! It's slightly expensive but I don't mind that when you consider that the money is going towards conservation. The tented rooms are really nice and a bit of luxury including their own em suite, comfy beds and a/c. Location is excellent. Definitely worth staying here if you plan to go turtle watching. From the look of the main building the tents are much nicer and worth the extra over the rooms. Staff were excellent including the kitchen and dining staff and all guides very friendly. Better to stay here if you want to watch turtles as they make sure you are in the first groups to see the turtles in the evening and you get the extra morning tour. Food was decent (curry particularly good) and plenty of options including lots of low fat and healthy options. Only thing we felt that dinner was very expensive compared to elsewhere in Oman and they charge extra for the bottle of water that they serve to you as if it's included. I guess it's a captive market but it seemed unfair. The museum could do with a little attention ass some exhibits broken and I felt there could be more information about the turtles but overall is was the best thing we did in Oman. I would definitely do it again."

SAMA Ras Al Jinz

"New management are in the process of improving the hotel. 10 new deluxe bungalows already completed, with a further 10 due to be completed early 2020. The rooms are very large, so feel a little under furnished for their spacious size, bedside lights would be a big benefit. Food in the restaurant was excellent and the staff are all very friendly and keen to help. Highly recommend a stay here."

"Having read mixed reviews, I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. The Sur Plaza Hotel certainly isn't the best hotel you will ever stay at, but it appears to be the pick of hotels in Sur. the Sur Beach Hotel and Sur Hotel in the city centre both looked terrible in comparison. The staff were friendly if a little unhelpful, wifi was fine, breakfast was reasonable, the pool area is quite nice. The only downside was the location away from the city centre, but Sur Plaza Hotel is definitely the best choice is you have a car and worth considering even without given you could take a taxi for the short trip to the city centre."

OYO 111 Al Thabit Hotel

"This was my last night in Oman and I was very surprised with this hotel. Having in mind high prices in Oman, I wasn't expecting much for this price. But at the end this was one of the best hotels I stayed in while in Oman. Room was big and comfortable, clean, on the last floor so I had nice view of the ocean. Location is just few minutes walk from the restaurants and 15mins walk to Sur city centre. The hotel doesn't have wifi but there is Muscat Bank just next door who has free wifi. The best thing about this hotel was the staff who were very kind and allowed me early check-in and late check-out at no extra cost."

Sur Grand Hotel

"A reasonably priced hotel, especially when discounted - as it was for me. Good staff, excellent room; good size and a really nice bathroom. The buffet breakfast was fairly extensive, and Shipman, the steward on duty, was very helpful. It has a small rooftop pool - good for dipping, as well as excellent sea views. All in all, ver pleasant."

Traveler impressions of Sur

More about Sur

The small city of Sur is located in Oman’s central coast, easily accessible by taxi as there is no airport in the city. Sur is really just a slightly large village, and offers a great place in which to lose some time exploring old forts and lighthouses by the coast, as there’s really not much else to see or do while in Sur.

Upon arrival in Sur, one will quickly see that getting around on foot is relatively easy to do, especially if staying in hotels near the city center. While in the city, don’t miss a chance to see the old traditional wooden boats of this region, most of which are actually still built in Sur. Right alongside Sur Beach is an old wooden boat museum, located inside a retired workshop.

Al Ayjah Watchtower is an old lighthouse that offers spectacular views of the surrounding village, as well as the harbor, and it’s often most weekdays. The lighthouse is located near the major suspension bridge, which is in itself a local landmark and easy enough to find. Other than the watchtower, Sur is also home to many forts and ancient structures, one of which is Bilad Fort. Most of these forts don’t offer much written history or artifacts, but they are interesting structures in which to move around and perhaps get a feel for what this place might have been like once upon a time.
