Different parts of the city providing different experience - Old city centre, SIP and close by to 2 famous lakes!
Very lovely city with an old world charm, visit ping Jiang Lu for great food and some shopping, they also sell really great fruit teas there.
SIP is also a really nice business district with nice landscaping and street art.
An ancient feel of a modernized city which doesn't have any high rise structure due to government preservation policies.
nice pleasant place to go to enjoy the old ancient part of china. Many old buildings and sights around that can show you the China we don't see in the big cities.
Friendly people around.
It's a beautiful city with lots to offer. There are so many historical places like museums, temple etc.
for people who like to learn more about the Chinese culture and also there are shopping centre nearly everywhere. You can find all kind of foods and goods here in Suzhou. People are quite friendly but the only problem is they don't quite speak English, even among the young ones.
Took the G train from Shanghai, it was so fast hard to believe its an other city. People are friendly and speaking chinese goes a long way to get extra good out of locals.
I highly recommend the nearby Water Towns and the Ancient Town at the East end of Town. The pavilions and gardens that are recommended by the tourist centres are not worth it unless you are able to avoid the hordes of tour groups and can appreciate the history behind the structures.
Suzhou is full of ancient monuments and buildings, showing the lifestyle of ancient China, also wonderful traditional gardens, such as the Humble Administrator's Garden.
Wen enjoyed strolling in this huge garden, with many beautiful lakes and buildings. Also although there were many other tourists it was still quite enjoyable. The tall pagoda is well worth a climb as well.
Suzhou has many facades. Part of It is very traditional and historical. Part of it looks like Singapore and part of it looks very cosmopolitan.
We went out of town about half and hour by taxi to the Embroidery street, that was amazing. There was about 1km of hand made embroidery shops both sides of the road.
Make sure you keep your taxi while you are there as it would be hard to get back to town with out it. We loved the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute and learnt so much about the wonders of hand embroidery. The Silk Factory was very interesting to.The little side streets over the canals where we were staying were so much fun and sold lots of interesting goods. The Humble Administrators gardens was just lovely especially in the rain. We also went out to to the Pear Exhibition Centre. Now that was amazing, cheap pearls any colour and size. They are grown locally in the fresh water lakes. We took taxis and the metro to get around. I just had small cards with where we wanted to go in chinese and never had trouble any where getting to and from venues.
Suzhou has some pretty canals. The Yunyan Pagoda and surroundings at Tiger Hill are well worth a visit.
Otherwise there is not so much to do. Recommend just spending 1 full day in Suzhou and then moving on to Hangzhou. You could also use Suzhou as a base while visiting nearby towns e.g. Tongli which is quite pretty.
It would be great to purchase a permenant home or apartment and to live and move to Suzhou. The environment is so nicc, I don't mind to raise my children here.
The city is so comfortable and relaxing. This is a good place for holiday. There is many places for sightseeing.
Besides that, you can find many nice foods here.
Very different from the cosmopolitan city, Shanghai. Had many huge malls as well. Took the high speed rail which took us 25 minutes to reach from Shanghai.
Was not so crowded and congested. Nice, simple city
A nice place with modern buildings and hotels and and very nice old historic part with canals and boat rides etc
Suzhou is a very Chinese style city, you can find the traditional buildings. Night river cruise must do at night.
Others, Humble Administration's Garden and Lion Forest Garden are the good place to visit.
It's a great city for slow down ur time and take a walk around the SuZhou river. Relax your body, hold ur lover's hand and walk around the city.
You will find a quiet and amazing city.
Make the effort to visit Tongli Water Town before it gets over-commercialized - Venice of the East. Full-day trip.
Buy admission ticket in town to save RMB20. Visit various museums/gardens in Tongli - wander around town to get away from tourist crowd - visit The Pearl (quieter and much more interesting). Poke around shops for great craftsmanship. Found delicate Taihu Stone carved teapot - expensive but really nice. Give it 100 years and it will likely be a museum piece, I think!
THE SUZHOU INDUSTRIAL AREA IS VERY GOOD ITS NEW AND CLEAN AND NICE RESTAURANTS , THE DOWNTOWN IS AN OLD AREA BUT ALL THE MAIN CITY ATTRACTIONS ARE IN THE CITY AREA
There are many places to see and activities to do in Suzhou. It has a great mix of Chinese and Western restaurants and bars so you can enjoy the nightlife.
During the day you can visit the older area and see the beautiful canals and gardens. You can also do some shopping in the downtown area but make sure you know your prices (as with most cities in China) or the sellers will take advantage of you. This city has a more relaxed and laid back vibe compared with other Chinese cities but also includes modern amendities that you may need. It's worth checking out.
Nice city, relatively clean, green and watery areas, very good for schooling, retail business, and for sight seeing.
not much in the city, we did not enjoy much our trip because the weather was really hot. the gardens were not impressive the only thing that was nice on our suzhou visit was shantang street and our hotel room, hotel soul was really amazing
City with low rise buildings, centrally located as location of the ancient city was where we stayed. However we have difficult to catch a taxi from Shan Tan, one of tourist spot and night activities, back to hotel that we stay, i.
e. Pan Pacific at that time. We spent about 45 minutes trying to find one , with many illegal car trying, offering us the ride, and at the same time trying to block the taxi with no passenger coming to our way, we tried moving from the tourist spot to the Holiday inn bus stops and further down to the road near junction, hope to get one, after long wait, feeling sticky and tired. Finally we decide to go back to Holiday Inn where we stay for one day, seeking help at front desk to call for the taxi. After keeping us waiting for about 10 minutes, finally the staff decide to help us to call the taxi and we were grateful then, even though we knew the staffs at the front desk were not very willing to help if we are not the quest of the hotel. So impression for short 1 week stay at the people at Suzhou not friendly towards tourist or oversea visitor at distress. Not too good experience to travel on your own at this location.
Suzhou is a major city located in the southeast of Jiangsu Province, located adjacent to Shanghai. It takes less than 30 minutes by high speed train between Shanghai and Suzhou.
The city was originally founded in 514 Bc with over 2,500 years of history. The city's canals, stone bridges, pagodas and meticulously designed gardens have contributed to its status as one of the top tourist attractions in China. The city is also an important center for China's silk industry and is often dubbed the 'Venice of China'.
Very old city with many ancient parks. Many Suzhou old style buildings in the city. The Suzhou noodles are value for try with cheap price.
green city with beautiful gardens, many charming water channels. there are some mothern big bildings too.
great old city but the development in tourism is not as good as how hangzhou did. taxi driver i had was not friendly n hotel staffs were not well trained n poor english
Suzhou is quite commercialised. Still, it was a good place to learn the history of ancient China, there are many gardens and mansions once owned by scholars and famous people.
Because of the many folklores and intricacies behind the architecture and design of the gardens and mansions, I suggest it is worth the money to engage the local guides at each sightseeing spots to walk with you or else you will come out of the places missing out many interesting stories.
The Lingering Garden and the Mountain Villa are the two best gardens I have seen anywhere. The Humble Administrator and Garden of Nets are also internationally important for their architecture and gardens.
In no other place including Japan are architecture, plants, water, and rocks so well combined. Altogether there are about 20 separate gardens well worth visiting and several nearly towns with canals.
Suzhou is quite a historic city and the sites to show for it too, but it also has very new parts, which makes a great mix (and it's centrally located for day trips).
