Traveling to Japan? Find Takayama hotels

This was the first hotel we stayed during our 15 days trip in Japan and it was the best. It's walking distance to Takayama hotel and easy to get around Takayama. The breakfast was good with selection variety. We weren't sure why most of the restaurants were closed on Monday night (only a few were opened) so, if you decide to eat at the hotel then, it's best to reserve a table. There's a nearby Japanese BBQ restaurant to the hotel which was delicious and reasonable price too. The room we had was overlooked the mountain which was covered with snow, great view. It was a good size with comfy floor bed. Good layout. The best is their ONSEN facility. Also 3 private ONSEN, 2 smaller and 1 bigger. Try to wait for the bug one, specious if you're a couple. You're allowed 30 mins each session so, it's not bad yo wait. No need to pay extra and no reservation is needed. You're not allowed to wear your shoes inside the hotel which is understandable. They have shoes lockers which ate totally safe. The staffs speak English and friendly. The serve free soup noodle every nights.

Location is excellent , walking distance to Takayama station. Staff members are friendly,polite and helpful. This is the third time my husband and I stayed in this hotel. The room is clean. We were upgraded to a suite room which is so spacious and comfortable. The breakfast is very good. We will definitely stay in Best Western Takayama hotel again in our next visit..

The best located hotel in Takayama if you want to be near the railway station. We went to Shirakawago in the morning and returned in the early afternoon after leaving our luggage in the hotel The location is so convenient that we even had time for a bite before catching the train to Nagoya. The staff are also very helpful and the breakfast was ample and nice. Well worth the money spent.

The best location, right in front of JR Takayama St and Nohi Bus St.. Small and compact rooms, typical Japanese hotel rooms, but they are clean. Inside the room you got nice beds, bath tub, toilet, towels, hot water, mini fridge, TV, pretty decent amenities overall. Perfect to stay if you are going to visit Shirakawago. Be sure to check Takayama Oldtown just behind it and the local hida beef cuisine.

We booked the Green Hotel without much knowledge of the hotel or Takayama as a whole and had a lovely time. It was an offseason booking (late February) and we got a great deal on suite for us and the couple we were traveling with. Our rooms were quite large, including a full Western-style bedroom and bathroom plus tatami lounge/living space. Both of the hotel restaurants we tried (buffet and traditional Japanese) were excellent and offered good value. While I couldn't personally try out the onsen due to their (quite traditional and common) rules barring anyone with tattoos my wife went there multiple times in our two-night stay and loved it. The staff were also attentive and by and large quite comfortable dealing with guests who spoke little if any Japanese. If you're open to walking around a bit the Hida Takayama Folk Village and historic downtown district are both easily reached for a midday trip without bothering with a bus or taxi, and the train station is quite close by for arrival and departure trips. All in all I'd highly recommend the Takayama Green Hotel for anyone looking for a quiet, restful stop en route to Toyama or just looking to get out of the major cities and decompress for a while.

I booked a Japanese tatami style bedroom with 6 futons. The room is very spacious with cozy corner to pour your tea before exploring town. The main spot is within walking reach & it's like 5 minutes walk from JR/ Bus center (Takayama). The open air onsen is the best here. Highly recommended!

When we first arrived in Takayama we were surprised to find that the hotel was an hour bus ride away. However, it turned out to be one of our best experiences in Japan. The hotel was situated inside the snow fields. Whilst the temperature in Takayama was 33% the hotel area was only 19%. This meant we could enjoy the hot mineral baths especially the outdoor ones. The staff were fantastic and I would fully recommend having dinner at the hotel. We were served eight course meals which were amazing. We stayed two nights and the meals differed each night. We stayed in the Japanese Western rooms which were very spacious with lounge and separate bedroom and large bathroom with tub bath. We took a day trip to Takayama which is a really nice place but we were glad to get back to the hotel to enjoy this place.

We decided that we’d stay in the Hollywood 30 sq metre room as a treat for the night. It was a Monday night and the room rate was very reasonable compared to other hotels. Also my partner had an international interview so we needed a good wifi connection. I had no trouble occupying myself while he was busy, in the private onsen as well as watching the sun go down at the beautiful bar area with “ self playing” baby grand hotel upstairs overlooking Takayama and the surrounding mountains. Breakfast was great too. It was walking distance to JR train station and bus station which was perfect for us as we caught bus to Kamikochi the next day. The best hotel we stayed at in our 2 week trip hands down!

This is my first time with open Air onsen here is very good, they have many onsen bath indoor and out door also very good view. I will go back to stay if we plant to Takayama. Hotel is a bit far from the town but they have very convenient shuttles bus from Takayama station very 30 mns so that is good enough to support.

The hotel is not big so its cosy. The rooms are big and comfortable. The hotel offers shuttle service from the train station to the hotel and vice versa. However, the shuttle services are scheduled. So plan your trip to the centre of Takayama ahead. There is a family mart opposite the hotel. Will stay in the hotel again should I visit Takayama again.

Went here last night with my hubby, we ordered a room which apparently the best room in the ryokan. My room called Fuki (Room no 13), a spacious japanese room located on the Ground floor, with wooden bath, mini garden and patio for enjoying our green tea. Surprisingly, the room is extremely clean! Also the ryokan is located in the centre of Takayama.. very close to Morning Market, 5 min walk to Suzuya Restaurant (if you are looking for Halal certified Steakhouse) & 15min walk to the iconic Sanmachi Street. In addition, the owner - Akiko Tanabe, is also very friendly she greeted us at check in and check out time, she even gave as chopsticks as souvenirs at check-out!! While our stay, we experiencing sleep in Futon (japanese bed) on the floor! definitely satisfied with the ryokan and will come here again whenever I come to Takayama..

The hotel is not that close to Takayama Station, but close to the old town by few minutes walk. However, there is free car pick up service between hotel and Takayama station. So, it's convenience for visitor who travel by train. We spent 2 days here and very appreciate in Staff service. The room is very clean and Onsen is comfort. This is the best hotel we ever stay in Japan. Will definitely come back here in someday.

Out of all the hotels I booked in my recent trip to Japan, I paid the least for this hotel, and yet, had the most wonderful stay here. On the first day, I arrived early in the morning to be greeted by the elderly couple at the Ryokan. They dropped everything they were doing and walked me to the nearly bus stop, to make sure I don't miss the next bus to Kamikochi. In terms of the rooms, I was surprised by how clean the rooms were. In the evening, he made sure we were comfortable with the bathroom facilities in the hotel, and he was very comfortable talking to us about Takayama and shared his story about the ryokan, even if we don't speak Japanese (we had the help of Google translator!). I would recommend this ryokan to anyone travelling to Takayama for an authentic feel of travelling in Japan.

We visited Takayama as a family with young children and J-Hopper provides one of the better services and value on my trip to Japan (we stayed in 4 other locations). When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff (shout out to Keith, Ian and Matsu). J-Hopper has an elevator if you have bulky luggage to bring up to higher floors. We were given a spacious tatami room with en suite bathroom, so that's great! J-Hopper comes with a well maintained shared-kitchen, shared shower rooms (if you don't have an en suite) and pretty decent coin-operated washers and dryers. Upon entering the premises, no shoes are allowed but proper shoe cabinets are provided as well as clean slippers to use in their premises. In the living room area, there are lots of information on places to visit in Takayama as well as places around the Gifu prefecture. Staff are also helpful in showing you must-go places to eat and visit in Takayama. Location wise, it in a rather quiet area but fairly near distance from JR station, bus stop, shopping area and Takayama old village. We also bought discounted tickets from J-Hoppers for the Shirakawa-go tour and the English tour guide is entertaining and helpful. The only gripe we have is probably the tatami mat that sheds tiny pieces of weaving that get stuck on your socks and garment, which is common for more tatami mats. Otherwise, all in all, we higher recommend J-Hoppers Hida Takayama. We will return to J-Hopper if we do go back to Takayama to see Shirakawa-go for the January light show.

This hotel is Ryokan, Japanese style located at the city center of Takayama, only 3-5 minutes walk from JR train and bus station. It closed to tourist attraction places and restaurant. The hotel has public baht (onsen). The room was clean and comfortable bed, the room space is quite big comparing to business hotel in Japan. Traditional Japanese breakfast was so great. The staff are very friendly and can communicate in English. This hotel is so great, we will stay here in next time.

Super hospitality and very detailed services from every staff. They recognize every guest's shoes when you are going out side. Your shoes will be ready for you. Our butler is Yukimi San, superb service. She gave us chocolate for the Valentine's Day. My wife recommend the 100years old relax kura for lady only. Breakfast and dinner were delicately prepared and served. They also have pick up and drop off from hotel to Takayama train station. Wearing japanese traditional dress and walk out side during snow fall is unforgettable experience for foreigners and great for taking picture too. Our room has a wooden private bathtub with window open to see view of the snow fall and the city while bathing. However it is not spring water, it is regular water for bathing, private bathing while watching snowfall over Takayama city is priceless. Lastly, Isite.com tour to the world heritage, shirakawago, also pick up and drop off right at hotel front door. All in all unforgettable experience. Highly recommended.

This was one of the best Ryokan we stayed it in all of Japan. I traveled for 21 days in Japan and I found this one to be the most authentic. Its a 5 min walk from the takayama train station and its a beautiful authentic Japanese Building. Room has all the modern amenities, but the traditional Japanese style of decor and furniture. It was a great experience for me and my wife while traveling on our honey moon. The only draw backs would be that it has very slow WiFi and you have to book meals at the hotel restaurant in advance.

We stayed at K's House Takayama Oasis in a Japanese style room with attached bathroom and toilet. We had great and comfortable experience with Japanese futon and the room is very spacious and can easily fit 4 people. It took us only 2 minutes walk from Takayama train station to K's House, very nice location and close to supermarket and attractions and pretty much everything. The next morning we had to checkout pretty early so we dropped the key into the keybox and left our luggages in the room (we asked earlier if we can leave the luggage at the reception and the receptionist was very nice and told us to just leave our luggages in our room and pick them up later). Overall, we love our stay at K's House Takayama Oasis, the atmosphere was very nice and calm and worth the price.

It takes about an hour by bus from Takayama to get to Okada Ryokan - at the Hirayu Onsen stop. But it is worth it; especially if peace and quiet is what you are looking for. The bus ride to the hotel is also very scenic - so, enjoy the ride! The ryokan hotel is rather well appointed and the staff really pay attention to details. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel. Everyone was so polite and helpful. I will definitely like to stay at Okada again if ever I get to travel to Japan again in future. Breakfast menu could be improved though - as I felt it was a bit bland. But it was very traditional though. And the rooms where the breakfast was served had a marvellous view. Thank you Okada Ryokan !

I am a big fan of K's House in Japan. This time I heard they have several branches in Japan and will open a branch in New Zealand! Each K's House has own concept! I've been to one in Kyoto and this time in Takayama. Both I love them 200%. Takayama is famouse its gorgeously marbled beef, similar to Wagyu. Many restaurants around K's House offer that beef menu but very expensive. The cheapeast but one of the best ways you can enjoy the beef is buying it from supermarket and cook it at K's House. Me, my husband and my friend walked about 15 min to a big supermarket and bought fresh ingridents including the beef and drinks about 5000 yen. We tried our best to finish all foods!!! While we're preparing your meal, very nice staff came frequently to us and gave advice how to cook and one staff shared her home-made yummy dessert! We went in Feb. very cold there. But indoor is warm and their bedding is super! Walking only 5 min, you can reach to the historic areas.

Really liked the place, will definitely stay again. Amazing views of Takayama, park at the door steps, amazing onsen onsight, very good traditional breakfast. Felt like real Japan. Very nice staff. I am coming back to Takayama, planning to stay there again. One of the best places I've stayed in Japan on this trip. It is a walk steep uphill, so if you have big suitcases and walking - it will be a workout. I love hiking, so it was just a nice challenge for me, not an obstacle. Onsen has open air option where you can see the entire city, day or night. My room had private onsen as well. Bath products are from Pola, which is a luxury hair and skin care line in Japan. Room is very clean and warm, yokata, towels, toothbrush are provided. They took mu luggage earlier no problem. I have stayed at another property for 1 night as this place was booked, and can truly say I liked it much more, although the other property was higher star rating and more expensive. Definitely staying again!

The Minshuku Kuwataniya Ryokan really suited our family of 5 (3 daughters aged 13, 10 and 6). It was by far the most economical accommodation we could find for the 5 of us in Takayama. The girls really enjoyed the Kimonos and Onsen. As a bonus, the location of the Ryokan is excellent, 5 mins walk from train station and 5-10 mins walk from most of the city attractions in Takayama and the best restaurant in Takayama is just around the corner. Although the English of the hosts was not very good they did everything to help us enjoy our stay. I would highly recommend for large families to stay here.

When you book this wonderful place, please book for including meals. It is really a nice place to unwind and recharge yourself. They have 3 public outdoor onsens (male only/female only/ mixed) and 3 private outdoor onsens (2 pools/1 pool). After trying so many onsens in Japan, this is the most authentic spring water and in a beautiful setting. You can use them anytime you wish, open 24 hours except for the private onsens which require you to book for certain timing of the day. The food served in their set meal is as authentic as its inviting spring waters. Very safe location although it is quiet. We had onsens in the mid of nights too. Regretted such a short stay there. We will return soon! Sinhotake Ropeway is a stone throw away. Resort can be reached by the green bus and the ropeway is 1 stop after it. You may opt to buy the 3 days pass with entrance to Ropeway from the bus station. There is a 1 & 2 day pass too but without the ropeway. 1 free ride is provided by resort. Check with them if you are going.

Near Bus station, a quite big Japanese style house held by an old couple. Casual and warm place, likes to have a stay at your friend's home. Clean Japan-style room and enjoy 3 private bathrooms for hot spring, suitable for sweet couple.

Hirata Kan is not a new hotel in Hirayu. However, they will make you feel great by their service. All staff are well-trained and have excellent attitude. Staff are prompt to answer any questions and eager to help you. The meals are wonderful especially the special 'Flowers of Hida Honey' which will be provided along with the breakfast; DO NOT MISS IT since the master of Hirata Kan is an active honey maker.I would definitely recommend this to my friends.

I arrived at around 10am on the second day of the Takayama Autumn Festival, and the kind staff took in my luggage for safekeeping and gave me a map and directions to the festival location. the hotel itself was easy to find, about 10 minutes walk from Takayama station and plenty of restaurants nearby. the double bed was quite large & comfy, the facilities were clean and adequate amenities were provided. sadly, there was no wi-fi, but there is a computer in the lobby for public use. I loved walking around the area, with its quiet neighborhood and tranquil atmosphere. It's a lovely town worth the visit, and if I come back, I will gladly stay at this hotel again.

It u wanna enjoy the original local resident culture during u'r trip in Japan,this hotel is a good choice. Its not very far from the station of JR Takayama,and you can walk to all sights form the hotel in Takayama.

Loved how they gave you discounts to other things like the spa across the street. Staff was super friendly and kind. They also have the best bike rental service in Takayama. Renting bikes from them are super cheap, and you can pay for the service after using the bike if no one is there. Just sign your name in the guest book and pay later. The beds were made for you! Thank you so much. I had no clue how to make a Japanese-stylized bed in some of my other hostels. I was also tired after getting in bed and had no energy to make one after going out all day. I was also happy to see that there were two electrical outlets provided for people in their beds. Some of my other hostels didn't have those, which really shocked me when I was there. They handed out maps to people and also took the time to give me some recommendations of the area :') so sweet. Arigatou. I also had fun talking to them!!

Ouka Hotel Takayama is the best hotel we stayed so far in Japan. It is located quite convenient, about 10 min straight walk from Takayama Station, on the main road of Takayama. Right beside the hotel, there is Seven Eleven where you could buy snacks or quick grab breakfast. The first thing you notice is how it feels like home, when you enter the hotel, they provide a shoes rack to put on your shoes and change to their comfy slippers (not some cheap thin one). The receptionist, Mr.Manabu, speaks fluent English and very friendly, he give some helpful suggestion about where to go and visit in Takayama. There are also some information about Tourist attraction, place to eat (and how much it will cost) on their bulletin board. There are living room where you could interact with fellow traveller and also kitchen with free tea and coffee. We (3 male adults) stay in superior Japanese room with inside bathroom. The room is quite spacious with japanese tatami style and futon. There is also small balcony inside our room and the bathroom is completed with a bathtub. They also provide free earplug and comfy thick yukata, just in case if you need one. But the most interesting thing I found is a hand-written personal welcome note with my name on it. Very very nice touch and excellent personal service! They have washing machine and dryer for you to use (with small cost). I really recommend this hotel if you want to explore Takayama and Shirakawago. I definitely will stay again in Ouka Hotel Takayama.

My husband and I stayed there for one night before heading to Shirakawago the next day. It’s a lovely traditional ryokan feeling homey and cozy, tucked away in the mountain with amazing surroundings! We were so pleased to find a small onsen outside the room which we enjoyed so much! The downside is it took one and half hours on the bus from Takayama bus terminal costing JPY2000ish per person one way so it’d be JPY8000+ on top taking three hours of your time on the bus. Not recommended if you have a tight schedule like us. Also we paid JYP5000 each extra to have the hida beef 12 course kaiseki menu. It was set in private dining room, quiet and peaceful. Being big foodies like me and my husband, we found the first few courses absolutely delicious including the Hida beef, but my serve of the cuts were uneven with two slices very thin comparing to my husband’s, not the precision you after in Japanese cuisine. I’m afraid the last three courses were very disappointing being a bowl of rice, a miso soup (only soup) and a scoop of vanilla ice cream as dessert. After those wonderful courses, you were not expecting to have a single scoop of ice cream as dessert to finish your meal. They could do better. Other than that, we did find a few bugs in the corridor and on staircases, you just got to watch your steps when walking around. The walls are thin that we could hear our neighbors’ movement. Luckily they did not sleep too late so we ok. Indeed it’s a lovely Ryokan with good atmosphere but with room for improvement.
