The Milford sound was beautiful great cruise and bus trip. I went for a ride with high country horses who were very friendly and although the weather was not terrific they still took me even tho I was the only one on ride.
Will have great memories of this area
It is a perfect place to stay for a trip to Milford Sound as it is only 2 hours away. So you can arrive one day and spend the night and then go to Milford Sound and spend a second night before leaving the next day.
Our family loved Te Anau in November. The town remains charmingly low-key. Nature in and around Te Anau is lovely both in terms of that which is untamed and that which is cultivated.
The town gardens and playgrounds and minigolf were great fun for all of us - and the restaurants were good. We recommend a trip to the amazing glowworm caves along Lake Te Anau. Spending time walking along the Lake itself is wonderful, especially at sunset. Naturally, the ride to Milford Sound and the boat rides in the Sound are incredible and humbling - it is the sort of place that provides lasting perspective in life, and we are all very grateful for having been...
Whether you want to explore beautiful rivers and coastlines, or whether white water kayaking on swiftly flowing rivers is more your thing, there is options to suit everyone.
Te Anau is a small city. You can literally walk around it in about an hour. But it's close to Milford Sound, which brings in a large amount of revenue for this city.
Make sure you just go into the city and try some of their food.
It's a beautiful picturesque and quiet place to stay. Great base if you want to visit Milford sound. Not recommended for the food or usual friendly tourist atmosphere.
Te Anau is an insignificent small town on the way to Milford Sounds. The glow worm tour is well worthwhile and there are some walks which leave from the area.
Good for an overnight stay if you are visiting Milford sounds, otherwise give it a miss!
If you drive the car from Queenstown to Milford Sound. it is better to stay in Te Anau for a night, so that it won't drive too long in a single ride.
Te Anau is a superb, small lake resort, excellent beaches, good restaurants/shops and an ideal place for stopping en-route to/from Milford Sound.
A quiet little town to relax with family. I would recommend people to stay a night if they are planning to travel to Milford sound.
It was better than I expected.
Cute, very small town on the edge of a huge lake with walking paths. This is a starting place for many trips to Milford Sound.
This city is very beautiful. The small town is very cute. Many Italian restaurant, and the one we had for dinner is very nice
Need to stay for 2 nights if planning to visit Milford Sound. Because a day trip will take 7 hours to complete from Te Anau.
gateway to milford sounds which is a must see. drive from queenstown and spend the night in te anua after trip to miford.
My original intention in staying overnight at Te Anau was to be able to arrive at Milford Sound in the morning time.
But I found that the city was lively: it has a beautiful lake, lots of kiosk offering good stuff and outdoor activities, and I found a good dining place at the corner of city center (the Fat Duck). Wish I could spend more time exploring the city.
Nice water front area. You czn just sit & watch seaplane & helicopters take off & land. Plenty of places to eat.
About 2 hours from milford sound & very close for glow worm caves.
Took a day cruise in Milford Sound (only need to do a day cruise) and an overnight cruise in Doubtful sound.
Fjordland Expeditions is by far the BEST operator in the region providing a very personal and memorable experience as a max of 14 passengers sail. The captain dives for our lobster dinner, we fish for our own dinner, Mandy never leaves you hungry with her delicious homemade snacks and meals and start the second day with a nice kayak or swimming if you have the guts to jump in.
Small town that does not have much night activities other than the Tab for drinking and perhaps some games.
Recommended activities to do in the area is the visit to Doubtful Sound. If you have sufficient time, might want to include the glowworm caves.
Basically ,it is a very simple town. Nothing to much offer except quiet and good transit to Mildford sound.
You still can stay in queenstown and travel down to milford sound in the early morning but that will take you 4 hours drive.
I´ve been in Te Anau twice, 12 years ago and last week. The town has not changed much but the prices have.
We found Te Anau to be excessively expensive, both in terms of food and local tourist attractions. I would most certainly recommend the lakeside walk through the most magical forest that circumnavigates the lake and goes onto Dock beach and Brod beach and the start of the keppler track. Just make sure you have plenty of sandfly repellant.
Te Anau is a beautiful lake. Must visit the Glow Worm cave. A good staging place to visit Milford Sounds
Te Anau's Wildlife Park. One can discovered Takahe bird & other unique native birds. Free of entrance.
