This town is like Paraty in that it is a historic treasure, but apart from tourism and local crafts, there isnt a lot of local activity, apart from agriculture in the wider area.
It is charming, very well worth a visit, but can be "done" in a day or so. If you have a country house to furnish in a charming rustic style, this is the place to buy your furnishings and linens! We loved the restaurant "Tragaluz" a bit more pricey than the norm, but so good, in lovely surroundings. Bone up on the history of the town first, there is quite a lot to know! A car is not essential unless you are staying longer in Tiradentes as buses are frequent to Sao Joao del Rey, where there is a big selection of long distance connections.
