"Brilliant tour of the national park. Great facilities. Staff very helpful for booking a taxi which was a really good price as well. The place is difficult to find. The owners need to place the hotel on Google maps please! It's down a random road past the Kottawatta village. "

"We stayed at Udawalawe Safari resort for 2 nights after changing our booking form another hotel. We got scared off the other place after reading some horrible reviews and decided to book here instead as we needed a bit of luxury after some of our other experiences in Sri Lanka. It cost more than a couple of places we had previously stayed at, but boy was it worth it! we had a massive room with a very comfortable bed, and a nice big balcony to sit out on in the afternoon drinking beer and reading. The pool was also massive and we virtually had the place to ourselves for most of the afternoon. Also Buffet meals were fantastic. The staff helped us organise everything and just let us bill it all to our room and finalise payment when we checked-out. They were really helpful and made our stay very enjoyable. We organised an early morning Safari tour after our first night and I would recommend this as the main thing to do while you're there. We saw about 30 different elephants, as well as lots of other wildlife (Peacocks, land monitor, hawks, eagles, crocodiles, deer, etc). make sure you do this and also visit the elephant rehabilitaion centre a short walk from the resort."

"Beautiful place. They are the pioneers of Eco tents so they can well anticipate the requirements and needs of guests. Tents have been recently refurbished so as good as new. There's wifi in the common rest area. FLUSHABLE Toilets and shower in the tents. Tents are nicely zipped up so bugs won't come in. There's a mosquito diffuser provided. Plugs, fan, towels, proper beddings and sheets, everything you'll need. Treated to a BBQ dinner under the stars with a huge bonfire. How lovely! Beer and wine are available at a reasonable extra charge of 400 and 800 rupees each. Spoilt silly with a delicious lunch of Sri Lankan dishes before check out. Wifi is available at the common rest areas. The staff were extremely hospitable and friendly! Special shoutout to Manager Wayne and Sudesh for making us feel so at home. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Sri Lanka and is looking for a "safe" adventure."

"We stayed here for one night to do a safari on Udawalawe. The staff here were exceptional, very helpful and couldn't do enough for us. They played badminton with our son, organised the safari with a very good guide and recommended great places to eat. We had breakfast here after the safari which was fantastic. The room was great and clean and perfect for the 3 of us. "

"We stayed in Elephant Trail for 2 nights, it seems most people only stay for one, but travelling with a young child we didn’t want to move to often. The room was spacious, modernly furnished and spotlessly clean. The bathroom – a bit dark, but that didn’t bother us. With a massive shower cabin it was very comfortable. We stayed in one of the rooms directly at the swimming pool, virtually at our balcony door, but the rooms on the upper floors have their perks too – balconies with chairs and a table, there are also a few communal terraces around the property. I found the architecture and design the biggest asset of the place. The staff were also very hospitable, helpful and kind, they made soup for our baby upon request and were eager to accommodate requests. The problem with staying here for more than 1 night is that there’s virtually nothing in the area – the small town is 7-8 km away, you need to hire a bike or tuk tuk to get there. The hotel restaurant serves nice breakfasts, we only had the buffet dinner once, it was quite expensive and though it mostly included western food, it was quite OK, a nice change after a longer time in Sri Lanka. The restaurant sells beer too, which isn’t understood in Sri Lanka. We did the safari organised from the hotel, it was just us in a jeep for 3500 Rs, we were quite happy – the driver mostly drove around solo, not accompanied by other jeeps, although he barely spoke English. But he did try to please us. Contrary to some concerns expressed on internet forums, I can confirm the pool is being cleaned, we also used it with our atopic skin disease having child and it was all good. If I were to come to Udawalawe again, I’d definitely stay here. "

"New and beautiful hotel. One of the best experiences in Sri Lanka. But not all staff spoke English well, and not all staff were attentive to the guests either. There's room for improvement. The dinner was tasty but pricey. I also tried the Ayurveda massage in the hotel. The massage itself was good. But they can do better to enhance the whole experience e.g. dim the light, play some music. Because all I heard was TV commercials and drama from the TV set at the spa reception counter......"

"We arrived around 7 p.m. in the dark, the last 80 kms of our journey by tuc tuc which ran out of fuel on the way. Directions to this place are actually 4 km away at a restaurant of the same name/ownership. They at least provided a motorbike guide to help otherwise you would never find it. Our booking had not been received as the internet was down. That's all the negatives, thereafter we were treated wonderfully, a tent was found overlooking the river, dinner served by the recently opened swimming pool and arrangements made to go on Safari the next morning. The food is excellent we had Cuury & Rice washed down with Lion larger. The following morning at 05.45 we were served tea before our guide took us on the most amazing Safari into Udawalawe National Park, returning to the campsite around 9.30 a.m. We were ushered down to the river to our table for two, complete with tablecloth, exotic fruit platter and chilled juice. Cooked omelette followed with Ceylon tea / coffee and toasts including a local coconut roti. Just fabulous. We spent the morning in the pool, the best in Sri Lanka, swimming under the shade of Palm trees before checking out to visit the Elephant Transit Hospital. If you like camping then you will love this place, if you don't like bugs and insist on air conditioning then book elsewhere! "

"The Mahoora tented safari provides great service but is let down by poor camp location. Our camp location was right next to, but not inside, Udawalawe National Park. Although it was right next to the park it was located some 60 minute drive from the camp entrance. Electric fences separated the camp from the Park, so there was little chance of wildlife coming within the park or us seeing anything from the camp itself. It was also next to a village and not far from a construction site, and so did not feel particularly remote. Since the main purpose of a safari camp is to be immediately close to wildlife, it seemed a bit pointless to us to camp so far away. We could have chosen anywhere to stay within a 60 minute drive to the Park entrance and would have had the same safari experience. I understand that the camp location moves from time to time, and that their other locations are usually within 15 minutes to the park entrance. However, in all these cases, why bother camping when you can have a nice hotel room within 15 minutes of the park entrance. If the camp was somewhere remote and in-nature, then there would have been useful. The campsite itself was dry, dusty and suffered from very strong winds. During the daytime the heat was oppressive at 35C. I know that it is not their fault about the weather, but if we had been staying in a hotel instead of a camp then we could easily have retreated inside until the heat and wind subsided. Having said that, there were some positives which helped justify the additional expense: Our jeep safari was very personal, in that we did not share the jeep with any other guests. Our jeep was also better provided with refreshments and snacks than other jeeps I saw within the safari park The evening dinner under firelight and next to a bonfire was very romantic. Food was better than average but not spectacular. All-inclusive means it is all inclusive of alcoholic beverages, which made the evening meal even more romantic "
