Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort
Udawalawe City,Udawalawe - View on map
"We stayed at Udawalawe Safari resort for 2 nights after changing our booking form another hotel. We got scared off the other place after reading some horrible reviews and decided to book here instead as we needed a bit of luxury after some of our other experiences in Sri Lanka. It cost more than a couple of places we had previously stayed at, but boy was it worth it! we had a massive room with a very comfortable bed, and a nice big balcony to sit out on in the afternoon drinking beer and reading. The pool was also massive and we virtually had the place to ourselves for most of the afternoon. Also Buffet meals were fantastic. The staff helped us organise everything and just let us bill it all to our room and finalise payment when we checked-out. They were really helpful and made our stay very enjoyable. We organised an early morning Safari tour after our first night and I would recommend this as the main thing to do while you're there. We saw about 30 different elephants, as well as lots of other wildlife (Peacocks, land monitor, hawks, eagles, crocodiles, deer, etc). make sure you do this and also visit the elephant rehabilitaion centre a short walk from the resort."

"Brilliant tour of the national park. Great facilities. Staff very helpful for booking a taxi which was a really good price as well. The place is difficult to find. The owners need to place the hotel on Google maps please! It's down a random road past the Kottawatta village. "

"We stayed here for one night to do a safari on Udawalawe. The staff here were exceptional, very helpful and couldn't do enough for us. They played badminton with our son, organised the safari with a very good guide and recommended great places to eat. We had breakfast here after the safari which was fantastic. The room was great and clean and perfect for the 3 of us. "

"This is a must stay if you’re going to Udawalawe! Ran by a lovely young Sri Lankan couple who make your stay perfect. It’s clean, modern, with the fastest WiFi you’ll find in Sri Lanka. The food is amazing and you are made to feel so welcome. They collected us so easily from our previous hotel for amazing value compared to other prices you’ll be offered. The safari that they arrange for you with their own driver is better than ever with an English speaking driver who really cares about making sure you get the best experience on the safari and see all the animals which we did. It was an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend anyone staying here! "

"This was our favourite place to date in Sri Lanka. The location was easy to get to from the bus, walking distance to the elephant transit home and a short drive to the national park. It was on a quite street just off the main road. The owner greeted us with a fresh juice and was able to arrange a safari for us to leave in half an hour. The driver for the safari was amazing. We did two safaris and saw so much both times, so I would arrange this through the hotel for sure. We had a wonderful meal when we got back. The food was the best Sri Lankan food we have had to date and there was so much of it, real fast was the same. We didn’t have time to enjoy the lovely balcony and hammocks and chairs, but they looked great. I would definitely come back and stay again. Highly recommended. "

Elephant Trail Hotel - Udawalawe
Udawalawe National Park,Udawalawe - View on map
"We stayed in Elephant Trail for 2 nights, it seems most people only stay for one, but travelling with a young child we didn’t want to move to often. The room was spacious, modernly furnished and spotlessly clean. The bathroom – a bit dark, but that didn’t bother us. With a massive shower cabin it was very comfortable. We stayed in one of the rooms directly at the swimming pool, virtually at our balcony door, but the rooms on the upper floors have their perks too – balconies with chairs and a table, there are also a few communal terraces around the property. I found the architecture and design the biggest asset of the place. The staff were also very hospitable, helpful and kind, they made soup for our baby upon request and were eager to accommodate requests. The problem with staying here for more than 1 night is that there’s virtually nothing in the area – the small town is 7-8 km away, you need to hire a bike or tuk tuk to get there. The hotel restaurant serves nice breakfasts, we only had the buffet dinner once, it was quite expensive and though it mostly included western food, it was quite OK, a nice change after a longer time in Sri Lanka. The restaurant sells beer too, which isn’t understood in Sri Lanka. We did the safari organised from the hotel, it was just us in a jeep for 3500 Rs, we were quite happy – the driver mostly drove around solo, not accompanied by other jeeps, although he barely spoke English. But he did try to please us. Contrary to some concerns expressed on internet forums, I can confirm the pool is being cleaned, we also used it with our atopic skin disease having child and it was all good. If I were to come to Udawalawe again, I’d definitely stay here. "

Athgira River Camping
Udawalawe City,Udawalawe - View on map
"We arrived around 7 p.m. in the dark, the last 80 kms of our journey by tuc tuc which ran out of fuel on the way. Directions to this place are actually 4 km away at a restaurant of the same name/ownership. They at least provided a motorbike guide to help otherwise you would never find it. Our booking had not been received as the internet was down. That's all the negatives, thereafter we were treated wonderfully, a tent was found overlooking the river, dinner served by the recently opened swimming pool and arrangements made to go on Safari the next morning. The food is excellent we had Cuury & Rice washed down with Lion larger. The following morning at 05.45 we were served tea before our guide took us on the most amazing Safari into Udawalawe National Park, returning to the campsite around 9.30 a.m. We were ushered down to the river to our table for two, complete with tablecloth, exotic fruit platter and chilled juice. Cooked omelette followed with Ceylon tea / coffee and toasts including a local coconut roti. Just fabulous. We spent the morning in the pool, the best in Sri Lanka, swimming under the shade of Palm trees before checking out to visit the Elephant Transit Hospital. If you like camping then you will love this place, if you don't like bugs and insist on air conditioning then book elsewhere! "

More about Udawalawe

Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful natural treasures, home to wild buffalo, leopards, and of course, elephants. The park spans an immense amount of land, rivaling many natural reserves around the world, including the savannas of Africa. Udawalawe is located near the provinces of Uva and Sabaragamuwa, and is around 10 hours by train from Colombo.

The park is best accessed from Embilipitiya, which is located about 20 kilometers away and a great place in which to arrange one’s local tour guide if it has not yet been done. Hotels in the area will be very helpful in arranging these tours, as the local staff are better equipped to navigate some of the language barriers and other concerns that might arise. Once in Udawalawe, the wealth of natural wonders are sure to take up plenty of time, and the sights range from the popular Udawalawe Safari Camp to the Udawalawe Reservoir and much more. This is also the home of the Elephant Transit Home, which is where the injured elephants of the area are looked after by dedicated staff. The park itself is an impressive testament to Sri Lanka’s natural wonders, and it can take up several days for the dedicated travelers committed to exploring as much of it as possible. To find out where the rest of the park’s attractions are located, and where all of the hotels and guesthouses are in Udawalawe, take a look at the interactive map on this page and start planning the epic journey to this impressive place.
