Great location, good value & happy staff.”
This is a well located down town on the river boutique style hotel with lots of history and nostalgia. The staff and owners are all hands on and friendly. The best steaks in Rockhampton with a pub that has the atmosphere of a typical military officers mess bar filled with memorabilia. The rooms are basic but comfortable and spotlessly clean. With rooms starting at $60 per night you can’t go wrong.

Old and dingy ”
Air cond didn't work. Shared Toilet down the corridor was dirty. Tiny single bed and dark room actually made me feel like I was in a prison cell. No kettle. Room and bedding was clean but would never stay here again and recommend only for men.

Our one night stay during our roadtrip”
I love the design of this building, however, my fds werent too happy about it coz they found it a bit too old style and with all the mirrors in the room, no roof-top bathrooms etc. I did find it a bit hard to access to the third floor without and elevators. But Overall, i liked it.

Faded glory but a good place to stay”
I have stayed at the Criterion on a number of occasions but usually in the more modern motel units at the rear. These are exceptionally good. For this most recent visit, however, I had one of the so-called heritage suites at the front of the hotel and I have to admit that once past the novelty value they are getting to be pretty worn these days. Everything worked but you couldn't call the suites glamorous by any means - curtains are well worn, beds are basic as are the en-suites. The view of the river would be much improved were the thick layer of dirt and grime on the windows removed at some stage. Nonetheless, glad to have tried it once. But it will be back to the motel next time. Moving beyond the accommodation, of course, the bars and steakhouse remain among of the genre the best in town.

Basic with problems.”
Basic accommodation for the price. I was in the nosebleed section, 4 flights up to the room carrying my suitcase wasn't fun. The food in the hotel was truly terrible. I tried to eat there twice and was unable to finish the meals. The breakfast available was more than basic.. even juice had to be requested. Avoid the hotel on Friday nights: the noise from the band reverberates through the rooms until late.

Bare minimum”
For $70 you don't get much! Old single bed in a room with no view no bigger than a room you would get on a drilling rig, one glass in bar fridge, one pillow, one towel, one bath mat, no toilet in room, one little packet soap for washing hands, no tv or air con remote control, no bedside table or reading lamp, no DVD player in room but can be hired from the front desk for free with free DVDs with a deposit or copy of ID etc. Free WIFI but it was very slow. Room was clean. $38 for a 300g rib fillet is very expensive especially considering that Rockhampton is the beef capital of Australia. $17 for nachos, good size portion tasty and well presented, good value. Hotel had good atmosphere with live music and is in a great location if you want to walk along the river or walk into town.
