Centrally located in the bustling metropolis, this property captures an expedient location, offering easy access to the World Trade Center, Government Offices, banks, airline offices, and top tourist destinations. Take an easy stroll away and you’ll find York Street, the thriving business district, and Fort and Pettah Bazaar. Although a short drive away, your trip will not be complete without stopping at the Viharamaha Devi Park and the Cinnamon Gardens. Apart from being well located, this 1936 building is a landmark since it emanates historical atmosphere and reflects Srilanka’s architectural style from the 1930s. Grand Oriental Hotel is a great choice for both business and leisure tourists looking for a reasonably priced option located in the heart of the city.
"Breakfast was also fantastic with great range of choices."

Grand old hotel”
We loved the history of this place, very interesting place to stay and the location next to the port is excellent. Great breakfast every day and very attentive staff. Room was clear and the room service was very good. The only thing that surprised us was the other people checking in for a few hours in the night with their lady friends. Only saw this once as we checked in, but it was a bit of a surprise!
Home Away From Home”
The GOH has gone from strength to strength it has become my home! I love everything about it most of all the authentic Sri Lankan food hard to find in some of the hotels with foreign chefs. Keep up the great customer care and service. TD from UK.
Step back in time”
This hotel is a wonderfully unspoilt piece of colonial history located in an area full of similar gems.Although a little shabby and run down in parts it is the ONLY place to stay in Colombo if you want character and atmosphere. The staff are great too allowing me to check in very early having come off the night train from Trincomalee.
No hot water and worst room on the floor”
We had to run the hot water for 10mins each time we wanted a shower; also why, if the entire floor of the hotel was nearly empty, we were placed in the crummiest and most cramped standard double on the entire third floor, with a horrible view of the grey and mouldy buildings opposite, when there were plenty Of other vacant and nicer rooms? I don't get that, why can't you take care of the guests who have chosen to stay at your hotel? And what's the point of pushing two single beds together, sheeted individually? It's not like a double bed...quite disappointed really!
Won't recommend unless you have no other choice”
Pros is the location, otherwise mostly cons, old building with only basic upkeep. Room air-conditioning is poor, bathroom conditions more 1-2 stars instead of 3-4 stars Staff mostly unfriendly except for one or two.
Located in the heart of Colombo Fort, the grand dame recalls a previous era which is its charm. In room 341, the hot water takes awhile but eventually gets there. The AC unit's condensation leaks in the corner of the room., be sure not to put anything underneath that must not get wet. The Saturday and Sunday buffets in the 4th floor restaurant were excellent with a wide variety to choose from. There is a Spa facility, also on the 4th floor but didn't see any mention of it in the room
Very dated and tired but comfortable”
Wanted to stay in this historical hotel and comfortable enough but it is very dated and worn though clean. Personally I found it a bit depressing and the room did not have a balcony as advertised. Convenient for trains out of Fort station.
It’s ok for a night”
We needed somewhere close to the station with a private room and bathroom. Not much to do around in the evening, we also found a pair of boxers hanging on the shower curtain. A/C is really loud and there was quite a loud engine noise from outside. It did the job but it’s really old the place.
staff was very helpful
Worth the money. Only problem is many tuktuk Drivers hanging around nearby to scam tourists even though Police HQ is just beside hotel.
Great history, great place to stay and value for money”
This place is a legendary hotel and being part of it is a great experience for me... great location in central colombo overlooking the harbour. Buffet food is well served, linens smells good and crisp. I had the honor to visit the room of our national hero Dr Jose Rizal, it was like a time travel experience for me and im glad that the hotel had restored Its past history. Kudos to all and keep it up
Step back in time at the GOH”
Hotels such as the GOH are either being completely overhauled (go to the Galle Face Hotel to see this in action) so it is a real step back in time to stay in Colombo at the GOH- enjoy the Harber view from the fourth floor dining room- pro tip- look for the tiny balcony to the right-- enjoy at short eat at the lobby snack bar and envision the faded glory of the Raj in the old commercial district- good fun!
Colombo Fawlty Towers”
This was definitely a grand dame of a hotel and perhaps could be again, but now she is a bit of a tattered frump with a glorious past and many stories to tell. WE LOVED HER. Staff were great, our room was huge with spectacular views across the working port and all its modern equipment. Location was in the heart of part of the old town and within walking of yhe Dutch Hospital where we went for a lovely dinner. Breakfast was very good with lots of options.
Hallways staff was going around been loud”
I stayed at 333. Reception staff room was good . Value for money. Staff is quite loud discussing there business in hallways when guest expect peace and quiet. Oppositemy room there was managers office. I heard his conversations with wife and between staff. The rest was v good.
Dear Valuable Guest Thank you very much for your stay with Grand Oriental Hotel, we appreciate your valuable feed back and review about us, will try our level best to keep developing our service level in future Thanks
Grand old historical hotel in fantastic location”
Anton Chekhov and Jose Rizal were among the famous guests who stayed here over 100 years ago. Showing it's age but still great value. If it was ever renovated it would cost double or even triple the amount. Can walk to Fort railway station, Pettah and the Dutch Hospital area.
very nice hotel”
we had a pleasant stay, the staff are very friendly and warm, the room with antique fixtures are very spacious and clean. We enjoyed the buffet lunch at Lanka restaurant and the very fabulous italian buffet dinner at the harbour restaurant with a very beautiful view of the colombo port. shopping is nearby and sites, too.
It should be a 4 star hotel! Service is absolutely fantastic! The breakfast in the harbor room is a must to start the day !
A Colonial Gem ”
First time I have stayed at GOH and it is a time capsule and grand dame of the older hotels that fortunately are still left standing and in service. As would be expected for the time it was established (1837 I believe) it is adjacent to what would have been the port, wharves and Customs House. Thus is right in the heart of old Colombo. It is a little dog eared around the edges, but still retains it's majesty from it's former glory days. Staff is helpful and considering it is a government run hotel they are surprisingly helpful and enthusiastic. While I'm not a buffet person this one actually does standout as given a very tasty breakfast, lunch and dinner and the view of the port cannot be beat. The value for the money is superb as is the location. The rooms are of course dated, but quite spacious. It can get a bit noisy, but small price to pay for staying in such a gem. I personally love these older establishments as they have so much color. All in all a wonderful stay!
A majestic jewel in Colombo ”
We stayed here for 2 nights. It has an olde world charm that is wonderful & in its day it would have been ‘the place to stay’. This just added to its appeal. It’s a beautiful building with courteous staff.
Lesiure travel in class”
The hotel is old world and that is its charm. Wonderful hospitality, the staff was courteous, prompt and extremely helpful. We had specified a wheelchair accessible room within the most basic room on offer. But since the toilet was too small we were upgraded to a deluxe room at no extra cost. the room had the most gorgeous view of the port. Loved the breakfast buffet. the location was excellent and we just walked over to Dutch hospital, smooth going on the wheelchair too. The night club was a little loud but not enough to leave us sleepless. Overall a very happy experience at the hotel.
