This eco-friendly hotel is in the sleepy village of Munduk, where most villagers make a living as rice farmers. The cottages were converted from 80-year-old lumbungs, or traditional Balinese-styled granaries, where local farmers used to store rice in the old days. All cottages are simply decorated, but are full of character, and have private balconies overlooking the terraced rice paddies and the peaceful Java Sea. The Puri Lumbung Cottages Hotel involves local villagers in the many recreational activities offered to hotel guests, including yoga meditation, traditional Balinese dances with local school children, and wood carving with local craftsmen. Munduk is also famous for its varied terrains, perfect for trekking, and the friendly staff of Puri Lumbung Cottages Hotel will be more than happy to arrange trekking trips for their guests. Serenity and hospitality ”
For someone looking for a calm place with nice view and interesting lodging, this is a good choice. It surely is a bit older, some doors could use some oiling and you have to cope with animals from the fields and jungle, but the staff is more than willing to make it an enjoyable stay. Of course you are not in a 5star hotel though the hotel setting seems to suggest with its vast premises and villa settings. But if you can accept some little flaws in hotel standards and indulge good Balinese food and incredible trekking experiences around the hotel, then that’s the place. The activity program might seem a bit expensive at first glance, but I experienced fantastic tours, a brilliant guide, very good and taken care of equipment and places to explore within short distance for trekking, mountain biking or even canoeing, it was worth the money and time. Thanks a lot to the whole team at Puri Lumbung Cottages for a great time.
Dear Mr. Carsten, Thank you for taking your time to write a very awesome review about how your stay went at our property. We and the entire staff are so happy to know your stay and experiences was pleasant, in step with our effort to cater the best we can. Thank you for your note to oiling some doors. You are right sir, Because in high elevation and cold weather, the doors hinges rust quickly and squeaks. So it need a comprehensive maintenance. We greatly appreciated your valuable feedback, thank you for being our special guest. Will be pleasure to welcoming you back at Munduk Village again soon. With Best Regards Putra Puri Lumbung Cottages
Extremely relaxing place surrounded by the sounds of nature. The view from our bungalow's balcony (no. 23) was truly spectacular. The staff here were very nice and always helpful when we had any questions or issues that needed dealt with. Breakfast was great and the restaurant served up a range of delicious meals. If you are a light sleeper, I would consider bringing ear plugs as there are a lot of nature sounds (eg. frogs etc.) that could potentially keep you awake at night. I highly recommend Puri Lumbung Cottages!
Peace in the hills ”
A lovely place to stay with great views all the way to the sea. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The beds are either a standard double or twins pushed together so not great for sharing with young children. When we asked to up grade to a triple or was done easily and without fuss. In fact we had a better bungalow with an even better view. Breakfast is generous with croissants and pastries, tasty local confiture, and local coffee. Dinners were also very good with a mix of local and western. You can walk easily from the hotel to the three waterfalls. There is also another walk which goes through the paddy fields. The first part of the walk is easy to follow, but the map is a little unclear for the second half. Looking back we reckoned that we should have continued to follow the water course even though it doesn't feel like a proper path, because we rejoined it again.
Hard to get to but such a beautiful place to stay”
We had to pay quite a bit for a taxi (about 3 hours from Sanur) to take us to Munduk, but it was a gorgeous ride and an amazing place to stay. We had our own little cottage which was absolutely charming, with carved wooden doors and windows and a balcony overlooking the entire valley. Even though it was the rainy season and the view wasn't its clearest, it was a breathtakingly beautiful spot. The air was fresh and there were flowers everywhere; we spent over an hour gleefully exploring the hotel grounds, snapping photos. The hotel had free, freshly fried snacks both afternoons we were there, and there was a Balinese dance performance by local kids after dinner one night. Incredible! I can't imagine what a professional show would be like; this was mesmerizing. The food was so delicious, I loved their homemade papaya and pineapple jams, and they gave us bags of coffee as a souvenir on checkout. There're more restaurants an easy walk down the hill if you're inclined. And we spent a fantastic afternoon on a hike to see two waterfalls; it wasn't too difficult and we managed without a guide, though some paths weren't so obvious. Fortunately the hotel's map was reliable and we passed some locals to point the way. The waterfalls did not disappoint! Oh yeah and David Bowie and Iman spent time there in 1996.
I would recommand this hotel without any doubt. The restaurant is great, the vicinitiy are amazing. We had a very nice show from local community. Worth to see. The regular cottages are very small, barely space to open one suitcase,
Peaceful and Relaxing”
We missed the sunset view for 2 days because of late afternoon showers and cloudy skies. The view was still spectacular from the balcony with the paddy fields and rolling mountain ranges. The guided trekking to the 2 impressive waterfalls one morning was great. The massage afterwhich and a hearty lunch makes the day. The restaurant food selection is good and prices reasonable. Just 10 min walk down the road is the Munduk Village where more massages, good food and local handicraft/cooking classes are affordable too. We enjoy the stay there.
quiet location a little off munduk to the west of scenic lake bratan and very near to the munduk waterfall. idyllic and charming wooden cottages overlook rice fields, ideal for relaxation amidst the cool mountain air. eco-treks abound, where the trek to the nearby waterfall will take 30-45min one way past village houses and dogs that may lead you all the way to the waterfall if you get lucky. if you don’t feel too adventurous to trek, the hotel also offers courses on fruit arrangements and baking local sweets. the food is excellent and we were very fortunate to be treated to some balinese dances put on by the local village children. a really perfect getaway.
Lovely cottage above rice field”
very nice hotel, with confortable cottage; it isw a unic experience to be staying in such environment. staff is very nice; and there are plenty of trecking to do in the area. someone wrote once in this hotel review that the only unconfortable thing about this hotel was "the noice from the nature", i first found this review funny; but after staying fewe night there i must confirm; in between the running waters, the frogs, the dogs; the night can be quite noisy... but this doesn't diminish the charm of this hotel
Puri Lumbung cottages is so beautiful. Up in Munduk, I 10000% recommend it there. All the staff is soo happy and nice, everyone ! We stayed on Christmas and the owner is such a kind man and organized a Christmas and balanise celebration. They really welcome all people. They treat you so well and are so welcoming. The restaurant and spa are lovely. The property is beautiful. You will need to stay at this lovely place! Amazing ! 5 stars
Cooler mountain air, and the freshest coffee in the world”
Stunning views over never ending mountains, surrounded by cool gentle running water - this is a tranquil, cool space. The ‘eco’ side of this resort is obvious, with plenty of literature available so guests understand the challenges facing this beautiful island and the Balinese people. Highly recommended for a special refreshing few days in cooler mountain air.
Dear Ms Lin, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and leaving an awesome review to our property. We sincerely apologize for a very late response, hopefully it is not obscured to state we greatly appreciate your valuable feedback. So glad to know that your stay was pleasant, and you find our 'eco' cottages concept, an appreciation to nature, to be presented and preserved. Looking forward for welcoming you again at Munduk again soon. Best Regards Putra Puri Lumbung Cottages
A nice cottage with a beautiful view.”
I love the tranquil atmosphere the hotel has offered. Very quiet and peaceful. It's a nice place to contemplate as no telivision and anything electric available. Meals are excellent with reasonable prices. Recommended.
Really pleasant staff there. They were able to accommodate 2 extra beds at last minute for us which was FANTASTIC! The room is really classic with old-fashioned 2 swinging doors. The balcony overlooks an amazing view (paddy field, mountains..) such a great experience. It was definitely worth the drive up to Puri Lumbung. On a side note, at night especially, harmless insects such grasshoppers or moth might come in your way but the chilly weather and great company distracts you from all that.
This hotel was comfortable, and located in a quiet, natural setting. There were slats in our room's windows that couldn't be closed, so we had to use the mosquito net at night while we slept in order to keep the bugs out. The room didn't have any air conditioning, but it wasn't needed, given that the hotel is located in an elevated part of Bali that is cool at night. The hotel is walking distance to a couple of lovely waterfalls, the village, and rice terraces.
This was an amazing place to stay after a slow, day-long drive from Ubud. My two-story cottage was patterned after a traditional Balinese house with carved wooden panels and open-air cooling system. (That means no a/c and no ceiling fan, neither really missed.) Mosquito netting over the big bed, sweet little writing desk, balcony with views of the rice fields (literally ten feet away), etc. Several waterfalls were within walking distance (more like a jungle trek than a walk; be warned, and don't set off when it's raining as everything is incredibly slippery) and you can sign up for various lessons and experiences with the very helpful Reception team. (I went for a traditional Balinese music lesson and learned that playing gamelan is much trickier than it looks. The only minor blemish is that the food in the restaurant seemed…bland for Balinese/Indonesian food. Even the nasi goreng seemed a bit workmanlike. But overall it was honestly hard to leave this place. A bit of construction noise during the day as they rebuild the "coffeehouse," but this is scheduled to finish in April 2017.
I came here four years ago, and have been excited to come back ever since. It's still as it was back then: a gorgeous and quiet sanctuary amidst rice fields with the kindest staff and the most beautiful facilities. The huts are cosy little homes, with fabulous balconies and the food at the restaurant is wonderful.
Best choice in Munduk”
Best views of mountains, lots of vegetation, many trails start from the bungalows, staff extremely helpful and kind, Nice bungalow with beautiful view from terrace (#32), not super clean but ok, mattress getting soft. Restaurant very good Highly recommended.
I stayed with a childhood friend”
We had a short, 2 night, stay at a Puri Lumbung cottage. Because of the short time and the fact that my friend was sick on the afternoon of our one whole day, we weren't able to take advantage of all the things it offered. We loved our stay and would certainly return if possible
Rustic but comfortable ”
Beautiful grounds with rice fields, fruit trees, and flowers. The view down the valley is stunning. Villa 33 (and those naarby) had an incredible view from its spacious balcony. Spa was simple but nice. Staff were very friendly.
The Puri Lumbung Cottages Hotel, Munduk.”
There were no serious issues. Just one minor suggestion, it would have been nice to have had a kettle in the room. True, we could ask for hot water to be delivered in a thermos, and this was brought cheerfully, but a kettle would have been preferable. Other than that, we had no complaints and mush to admire. The Restaurant food was excellent, the surroundings idyllic and th staff gracious and obliging.
Tranquil paradise among plantation land”
We loved our stay at Puri Lumbung. From the cottage to the people taking care of us, the views and tranquility from the Lumbung, the sunset at Sunset bar and the trekking in the surrounding plantations. Only regret: food was excellent at the restaurant but lacked the authentic spices of tradiional Balinese cooking. Yet delicious. Loved to be served by hotel school trainees - being from the industry we felt they really deserved to be trained there. Caring considerate and very attentive. Great job!
