More about Aomori

The port town of Aomori is the northernmost prefectural capital on Japan’s main island of Honshu. The city saw much more through-traffic prior to the opening of the Seikan Undersea Railway Tunnel and the lowering of flight costs. The Nebuta Matsuri summer festival and several sites still make the city a noteworthy travel destination. Arriving is easy thanks to the Aomori Airport and a well-connected train line.

One of Aomori’s most attractive and popular times to visit is in early August. This is when the Nebuta Festival takes place, said to be Japan’s biggest fire festival, complete with street vendors, parades, and costumed dancers. If not visiting during the festivities, the Nebutanosato is a museum open year-round with exhibits related to the festival. The ASPAM Center is a popular stop for travelers to Aomori as this triangular building serves as the tourism center and is a great place for regional souvenirs. Interesting sites worth a visit in Aomori include Tsugaru Kaikyo Fuyu-Geshiki, a memorial dedicated to an all-time karaoke favorite, and the Aomori Bay Bridge. The Hakkoda-maru Ferry shows off is former glory days as something of a run-down museum and summer-time beer garden. Other top sites include the Sannai Maruyama and Aormori Museum of Art.
