Kusatsu is not really a big city. The main thing you'd like to try in the city is 'Hot spring'. Since's it's not a big city, you can spend short time to see around Kusatsu and center area including 'YUBATAKE' by walk.
It was interesting to see there were some Karaokes as much as resturant which was a bit much for the small city. Still Kusatsu has it's own scene which you can't find in Tokyo or other big cities in Japan, it's worth to try to visit Kusatsu.
Be sure to allocate time to visit Mount Shirane which is located half an hour bus ride Kusatsu town. The volcanic crater lake at the end of the uphill trek and the view down is worth while.
Best time to go is in Autumn.
The people of Kusatsu were more than friendly. Very helpful and welcoming. Except for a soba restaurant near the bus terminal.
I fancies some soba at 4pm and this place was open but no customers. Our set dinner was at 6pm at the hotel s my wife didn't want to eat. The older lady owner made a big fuss and complained about us to her husband the whole time while I ate. A little unusual behavior to say the least.
A very special place offer excellent hot spring facilities that is good for your health. A very good place to rejuvenate.
