Luoyang is our base to many other historical sites including Longmen Grottoes, Guan Lin Temple, White Horse Temple and Shaolin Monastery.
Also try the night market nearer to Lao Chen. Its a big city so we traveled by bus most time as the distance could be far. Bus could be really packed however and try to avoid taking them during peak hours.
plenty of things to see around Luoyang, The old town with its markets, the drum tower and somme real Chinese restaurants - we didnt meet many westerners.
We made our own way out to the Longmen Caves using a local bus from the area by the hotel (no we dont speak Chinese) out to the Longmen caves - what a great day out that was. if you want to see the real China, catch some of the local buses - everyone seems to go out of their way to help.
If you visit Luoyang you should try local resturant which cheap and delicious. Sight seeing around Luoyang very easy and cheap because of there are alot of buses and cost only 1-2 yuan.
We came to see the Longmen Caves and found them amazing. Do arrive early to avoid the hordes. We also enjoyed the museum and the White Temple, which has areas with temples in Thai and Indian styles.
Luoyang is known as the Peony city. Plan to go in April for the peony festival, although be forewarned that it will be crowded at this time.
Go to the parks for a taste of family fun including kite flying - this city seems mad for kites. Peony Park has many amusements. Even if you don't have small children it is fun to see the people out enjoying themselves on a nice day. Luoyang is very polluted so people with breathing issues should be careful.
Luoyang is a nice city. Not too big, but not too small. You have your western comforts such as KFC and McDonalds.
The people are friendly, and are interested in talking to foreigners. It's also clean with some nice parks and of course the Longman Grottos.
