Ooty also known as Udhagamandalam is the "Queen of hill stations" and the capital of Nilgiris district.
It is one of the most popular tourist resorts in India. Nilgiris means "Blue Mountains". It is a land of picturesque picnic spots. Used to be popular summer and weekend getaway for the Britishers during the colonial days. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. An added attraction for the tourists to Udagamandalam is the mountain train journey on a ratchet and pinion track which commences from Kallar, near Mettupalayam and wends its way through many hair-raising curves and fearful tunnels and chugs along beside deep ravines full of verdant vegetation, gurgling streams and tea gardens.
Ooty is a nice hill station to visit, the climate is cool, has a bit of everything like sight seeing, good restaurants, nice hotels and a place for relaxation and also a good place for family and children to enjoy.
Also it is a good place to chill out over the weekend with friends, family in group.
Ooty has nothing to showcase for more than a day or two. If the climate is cold enough, then you could spend 2 to 3 days depending upon your family members.
If the flower season is up, perhaps there may be more to see.
Very good place to visit during best seasons. Book well in advance. Try to take the hill train from Mettupalayam to Ooty.
Book first class tickets and it does not cost much.
Really relaxing city, and friendly people. Even the autos are reasonably priced with rates to major attractions displayed on boards at key boarding areas
A lovely location n the Western ghats arrival by toy train highly recommended. afixed price 4 hour taxi tour to local attractions highly recommended
The impression is that Ooty is overcrowded. It is if you stay in the town. Outside the market place and away from the noises, Ooty is a very good place to spend time with loved ones.
Do visit the Dodabetta peak, it is a good view point - if the skies are clear! Apart from that St. Stephen's church is also a peaceful place to visit. Other places can be visited as per your choice. Coonoor is about 20kms away and also has good ranges & points.
If you want peace and quiet, this is the place to go. Bring your camera, books and some sweaters and just appreciate the scenery or take a walk in the well groomed public parks.
Nature and development, nicely combined by the nice Tamil people...friendly honest people...lovely nature.
.tea gardens..nice food..peaks...and lakes..botanical gardens...five days minimum for relaxation
Go/come back from conoor by toy train - you have to reach the counter at 7:30 if you want a seat in the reserved compartment (just 40 seats) or the general compartment.
The first train leaves Ooty 9:15. The last train leaves Conoor at 4:15 for which you must be in queue at 3 PM Conoor has tea gardens and a few other sight seeing spots (Not worth mentioning) While in ooty, you must go to Pykara Lake - preferably on a weekday - nice views and a nice road side shanty with north indian cooks which serves nice Chinese. Pykara closes at 5, so you must start from ooty by 3:15
Good place for rest and recuperation, sight seeing and leisure-time activities. Horse Race provides added attraction during the summer
Ooty is the highest hill station in South India ( Nilgiri hills height of 2400 meters) very close to wild life parks which again is one of the largest tiger reserve in India.
People go to Ooty from the plains of South India for short holiday to enjoy excellent whether, play golf ( two interesting golf courses are there including one in Conoor. Botanical gardens in Ooty and Conoor are well kept.
Botanical garden is just so so. Ooty lake is very simple. The weather and local life here are fantastic.
Must visit place in India for being named as Queen of Mountains-Ooty for its nature, hills, chill climate etc
What a great place. It was 38 years since I was last in Ooty and my overall impression was that it is definitely cleaner, less litter.
The roads are generally not too bad but still needing a lot of work. We were fortunate to find an autorickshaw driver who was very good and economical too so we went all around the place. There is an excellent Chinese restaraunt and very good vegetarian restaraunts around town. The weather was glorious, cold crisp nights and warm days. The lake and boat house were excellent and we enjoyed a horse ride around the lake.
