More about Takamatsu

Takamatsu got its start as a port city and was one of the primary entry points to the island of Shikoku for many years. It wasn’t until 1988 that the island was opened beyond air and sea access with the completion of the Seto Ohashi Bridge, making it more accessible for both business and leisure travelers. Takamatsu Airport provides a limited service to the island, but a train service from Okayama might be more convenient and scenic.

This former castle town was once controlled by the Matsudaira Clan during the Edo Period. One of their greatest contributions to the area is the Ritsurin Park, one of Japan’s most beautiful gardens. Although not ranked in amongst the top three gardens of the country, it is still considered a Japanese National Treasure. Other than the beautiful views of the landscape here, there are tea houses, a restaurant, and a folk craft museum. If reaching the city by train via Takamatsu Station, a convenient first stop would be Tamamo Park. Here is where the site of the Takamatsu Castle can be explored. To really delve into the history of the province, a stop at Kagawa Museum exhibits history, traditions, and the people of the past. And for those wanting incredible views, head to Takamatsu Symbol Tower. If looking to explore, a short train ride to the east leads to Yashima, a peninsula that was the site of a major battle and today hosts an open-air museum, Yashima Shrine, and Tamamo Breakwater.
