"The location, and the look and feel of Fujiya Hotel was fant..."
31 July 2016
Visited by royalty, this historic resort with beautiful classic architecture and magnificent mountain views, offers outstanding service to all its guests. Sensitively restored, the entire hotel is elegantly furnished and the rooms are spacious and sport high ceilings. Fujiya, the in-house French restaurant, is set in a 1930s hall adorned with intricate carvings and Japanese art. There is an indoor and outdoor swimming pool and a traditional hot spring Japanese bath. At night, the Japanese ponds in the hotel’s beautiful grounds are illuminated to enhance the view from the traditional teahouse. Fujiya Hotel in Kanagawa is only a 10 minute walk from the railway station where guests can explore the city using the Hakone cable cars. OK Location, Good Service”
Location is ok. Right in front of Bus Station "Hotel Mae". Few mins walk uphill to train station. Service is excellent, staffs has been helpful and always with smile. The hotel itself however is bit wear off. But still enjoying it as the hotel itself is a history.
Beautiful hotel, especially in Autumn”
We felt most welcomed the moment we drove up to the hotel entrance and the valet came out to greet us with perfect English, and was showed around the huge hotel. Most of the staff we encountered spoke good English. The hotel's garden was beautiful and an attraction by itself, with autumn colours at its peak in November. The hotel was a quick drive from family-friendly attractions such as Yunessun (hot spring resort), Hakone Open Air Museum and Sounzan (to catch the ropeway).
Overall has a great experience in Fujiya Hotel. Will definitely come back again to stay. The surroundings of the hotel was beautiful and the hotel staff were very attentive and provided excellent service. They gave us complimentary biscuits when they mixed up our reservations. Very impressed by their service.
Good Japanese service”
Excellent service. So many efficient staffs were there. No necessary to hesitate to ask any to them and we had not been kept wait for any. As we liked to ask, some bodies were there. Also their responses made the things clear all the time. We had no stress at all there.
The hotel is very nice to look at - grand and old, with lovely gardens. There is a bath (note that this was hotter than any other onsen I've used in Japan!) and I didn't feel unwelcome with my tattoos. There are mostly older people staying in the hotel, I assume because it is quite expensive. The location meant we could easily get to all the sights, and the staff were very helpful with buses etc. I think it would have been better to stay for longer than one night to make the most of it! Breakfast was very nice.
Very tired classic hotel in need of renovation”
Sadly trying to survive on its status of many decades ago, this once beautiful old hotel is not aging gracefully. It is in desperate need of renovation and repair. The public onsen and indoor pool are filthy, paint is peeling, carpets are worn and outdated, food and beverages are exhoribantly overpriced and less than average. Staff are courteous as they are everywhere in Japan but I did not feel they are proud of this establishment as it stands. I hope a large corporation or someone with money restores the Fujiya to its former glory. Until then I would not recommend or return.
Beautiful old classic”
We picked Fujiya specifically for its historic majesty. We found it to be charming and entirely the appeal for the place. We had an enormous fifth floor room with a spectacular view of the village and mountains--upgraded thank you very much Fujiya. Other reviews cover the big concerns many have with this grand old dame's age. We, on the other hand, embrace her for what she is. A timeless classic with amazing history, stunning grounds, and old world charm.
...the coolest hotel I have ever stayed in. Not a spangly twenty-first century experience, but this is an amazing place - the building is beautiful and our rooms were huge. Don't miss the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the museum or the cocktail bar (the first three are free to residents, the fourth isn't, alas...) Gardens are lovely and Miyanoshita is an interesting little place. If you want a wide choice of restaurants and can't run to hotel prices, it might be good to eat in Yumoto and take the train back up. There is a bakery right by hotel for breakfasts.
Spacious colonial hotel in lovely setting with attentive, helpful staff. ”
Staff very polite and helpful. E.g., when our room specific WiFi did not connect on arrival, this was quickly remedied soon after a call to reception. A member of staff immediately came to reset the router, which we only could have done ourselves once shown where it was hidden! Rooms were impressively more spacious than the rooms in modern establishments. Yes this hotel is old, that is part of the charm. In answer to recent posts complaining of smoky smelling rooms, new glass smoking booths with inbuilt extractors can be seen outside at the end of the corridor. Also brand new air deodoriser units are provided in the rooms to supplement the air conditioning. As a result our rooms did not smell untoward and were comfortably cooled to our usual Cheshire climate while it continued to be a humid ~30°C outside (mid August). Would quite happily stay here again. We left feeling that any unflattering reviews we had read on Trip Advisor, in the lead up to our visit, no longer apply.
Nice Hotel with excellent staff ”
We had an overall, very nice experience staying at his hotel for a night. We had some trouble with the air conditioning in our rooms but the staff did a great job of solving the problem as quickly as possible. The hotel is quite large and the gardens are very nice for a walk. The hotel is old and could use a renovation but for the price we paid compared with surrounding hotels I think we got our value. I will say I may have a slightly different view than most as I like the history and unique architecture of this place so I was willing to ignore some of the worn aspects. The Hotel's restaurants and bar were very good. We enjoyed a nice dinner in the french restaurant, but be aware the prices are high as it is a very formal style place. We did not get out to see the sites of Hakone as this was our last day of an 11 day japan trip and we were pretty tired so just wanted to slow down and relax.
An amazing value at a mind-blowing hotel”
Everything at Fujiya Hotel was more than I'd hoped for. There's even a free valet service! The entire experience was almost too nice. My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary in Hakone and the Fujiya Hotel has set the bar extremely high for future celebrations. Everyone I've talked to about the hotel has been blown away by the low price of our room through Agoda. We both even got the fanciest breakfast ever for something like an additional $20. Ridiculous! We plan to take full advantage of similar deals in the future. The views of the surrounding areas are quite gorgeous. Our room was a lovely Western-style, nothing spectacular about the room itself but everything else went above and beyond our expectations. I can't recommend it enough.
Historic and warm. Staff was excellent. Curry was delicious!”
The Kitchen volunteered to pack a sandwich take out meal when we mentioned that we would be checking out prior to the scheduled breakfast time. It was excellent and sustained us through our travel day!
Wonderful hotel with an amazing history and even better location”
We visited here 10 years ago and always wanted to return. It didn't disappoint - was even better then we remembered.. The rooms are a bit dated but the hotel and grounds are stunning. The staff were gracious and helpful even though we spoke little Japanese. Overall a great experience and we will return.
A lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. Staff were friendly and helpful, room was a good size and the facilities were excellent (I'd particularly recommend the public Japanese baths). Overall a truly superb experience!
Great historic hotel well situated in the Hakone area. Easy access by bus and/or train to all the tourist hotspots. Rooms surprisingly large which is unusual for Japanese hotels. Recommend the Japanese breakfast.
One of the highlights of my trip!”
Stayed 2 nights at the Fujiya and it was wonderful. Yes, it is a bit worn, but oh what charm! We were fortunate to stay in the old main building of the hotel. We had a very lovely, large--huge by Japan's modern hotel standards--room with a view of the back garden. We booked 3 months ahead for the foliage season and am I glad! The place was fully booked. The hot water in the hotel draws from a hot spring, so you can bathe in a luxurious old tub in your room! I've seen some mixed reviews and can't speak to the quality of rooms in the newer sections, but if you enjoy the old world charm of a European style colonial hotel, this is it!
My husband and I stayed here for two nights to celebrate my birthday. The hotels architecture is amazing- the gardens beautiful, and the room was vintage classic. The food at Fujiya hotel was excellent and the hotel staff extremely polite and helpful. We LOVED our stay here!!
Get old world classic charm for a good price.”
This is a good Old Hotel. Don't stay here if you want a new, High Tech, Brand New Hotel. You won't get it here. The hotel started in 1878. The hotel is not cutting edge in everything that is painted and brand new. As anything that is over 100 year there are flaws. If you want to classic place then stay here. It would cost the hotel Millions in order to bring it to it's original standards. But they are in competition with other hotels charging less. So they have to keep their cost down and have to compete .So if you want a good price and a classic place; then stay here. High ceiling, big baths, OLD charm. The garden is beautiful. The Staff have the proper attire and charm. The breakfast are excellent. White table clothes, classic silver serving. If this hotel was perfect then expect to pay $1000 a night. So it is a bargain for what you get. Do you think John Lennon would stay at a low class hotel. For real seasoned traveler you will love it; I took my 18 year old nephew and he loved and appreciate the quality. He is a traveler in training. I'm 63 and stay about 90 days a year in hotels so I kind of know what is out there of hotel quality.
Grand old beauty!”
We stayed at the Flower Palace in a huge and lovely older historic room, but with modern amenities. The mountain view was really nice. This is building is also very well placed in the Fujiya Hotel complex. Upgraded from the Forest building for only ¥3200 and glad we did. Wonderful stay in a beautiful grand hotel!
HIstorical hotel, Good staff & location”
This is a very old hotel full of historical but maintenance very well. Staff can speak very well english and introduce us the places inside the hotel (example : garden, dining room, museum and public bath) when we on the way walk from lobby to our room. The room they provided to us very large and face to a nice mountain. Just need to notice is a short distance walk to train station a bit slanting, if you bring along with parent maybe hard for them. Or you can take public buses at bus stop outside the hotel.
