Huangpu is west of the Huangpu River. It houses most of Shanghai’s most important historic sites, and tourists are sure to spend plenty of time here. Hotels in Huangpu – Peoples Square include plenty of up-market options and a few affordable hotels that target domestic travelers. Given its central location in Huangpu, People’s Square is excellent base for visitors who plan on shopping but choose not to stay in the busy Pudong.
People’s Square is the most visited part of the district. This important landmark joins Nanjing Road, a famous shopping avenue served by East Nanjing Road metro station. People’s Square hosts a few government offices as well as the Shanghai Museum, the Shanghai Art Museum and the grand theater. With cultural sites like these, the entire district is frequented by tourists, locals and expatriates.
There are also several consulates in Huangpu, and several area hotels have luxury options that cater to visiting dignitaries as well as regular passengers on visa business. The major consulates represent Hungary, Venezuela and South Africa.
A few five-star hotels near People’s Square are north of the museum district on Juijiang Road. These include several well-known, international franchises. Another block north is Nanjing shopping street. A portion of Nanjing is closed to automobiles, and it features high-street shopping complexes. These are some of the most modern shops in Shanghai.
