More about Sanlitun Bar St. & Embassy Area

Sanlitun Bar Street and Embassy Area is one of the preferred places for visitors to stay while visiting Beijing. It’s a practical hub both because of the access to embassies and proximity to the nightlife it offers. It’s also a trendy place to shop for handicrafts and souvenirs.

Sanlitun was originally planned as an embassy district. The British embassy is here along with those of the Czech Republic, Austria, Cuba, Bulgaria, Botswana, Croatia, Belarus and Albania. Several comfortable, up-market hotels in Sanlitun embassy area attend to foreign government officials as well as tourists on passport business.

For the average commercial tourist, Sanlitun is known for its bars and clubs rather than its embassies. Major rebuilding campaigns are ongoing, and anyone who hasn’t been here in a few years may not recognize it today. In the past, this was the only place to find bars in Beijing, but it now has competition from other districts. Even so, late-night establishments on Sanlitun bar street and around Worker’s Stadium are incredibly lively on weekends.

The shopping scene in Sanlitun targets tourists with its boutiques and gift shops. Tibetan handicrafts, English-language books and knockoff designer fashions are for sale in Yashow Market.

While domestic and international tourists are the main demographic, a few hotels around Sanlitun bar street and embassy area pick up travelers on business. Most of them are working with the China Democratic National Construction Association or 3M China.
