In and around Shinagawa

More about Shinagawa

With the recent commencement of the Shinkansen service to Shinagawa, the area’s hotels have become much more convenient and popular, with Shinagawa Station becoming a convenient launch pad for trips to Kyoto, Osaka and the surrounding cities. Several hotels in Shinagawa are connected to Narita Airport via the Airport Limousine bus.

The area is well signposted, with many signs in English. The two sides of the station are quite different, with the west side mainly residential, while the east side is commercial and industrial. It is difficult to get from one side of the station to the other without walking through the station itself, so visitors should be sure to exit the station on the correct side for their destination.

Within walking distance of the station, Sengaku-ji is a temple famous as the resting place of the 47 Ronin, a famous group of samurai who banded together to avenge their unfairly slain master. A small museum has artifacts from the event and after, including wooden statues of all the ronin.

The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art hosts modern art exhibitions in a 1930s house which is itself a great example of modern architecture in pre-war Japan. Visitors who have built up appetites walking between Shinagawa's attractions can find a delicious meal at the clusters of restaurants around the station that serve both Asian and European cuisine.
