Lovely historical site to stay in ”
We stayed here for 1 night and were the only guests, the shower & breakfast were definitely highlights for me. Only downside was there were a lot of mosquitoes who had a feast on us while we were sleeping even though our bed had a mosquito net.

              Phenomenal Building”
The owner, (Dr.) Janaka, is an incredible fella whose family has owned the 260 year old building for the past 10 generations. Charmingly rustic with brilliant architecture to keep the whole whole cool throughout the day. The housekeepers & cooks were all very friendly and made delicious local (and bacon & eggs) breakfasts everyday. It's only a five minute stroll down to the water front, and then another ten minutes onto Galle Fort. The house can also help organise Tuk Tuks for you if you don't fancy walking. I would highly recommend this lovely house.

The historical mansion is an engineering wonder, Living in quarters fit for royalty, getting to know the wonderful staff
Our family of 5 stayed in this house over the Xmas break. We had a wonderful time being able to wonder around the Galle, Galle Fort and beach area. We always enjoyed the very peaceful and relaxing surroundings of the house after a day's trekking around. The staff are most gracious and attentive. We would certainly recommend a stay at Atapattu Walawwa as it is not only a place to stay, but somewhere you can gain a wonderful insight into Sri Lankan history and culture directly from the people.

              heritage house & garden
This is a interesting heritage house with lots of potential to become a lovely guesthouse. The issues with this place we experienced made us decide to cut off our already made and paid booking. The current management and staff do their very best, however they don't seem to be equipped to be hotel staff and they are provided with minimum resources to work with. The house is stacked with antique but lacks atmosphere and comfort. The road directly next to the place is very busy from early(5am) morning till late in the evening. This is very disturbing for sleep and relaxing. The breakfast is no more then poor hospitality standars. Nescafe coffee, stale white bread, a dry plaint omelet, fluorecent marmalade...? We had to buy our own mosquito spray to keep the room bugs and cockroach free. Unfortunately it didn't keep the rats away. We would advice the owner to seriously consider this place to offer it as a hotel. In short a wonderful 260 year old museum light years away from being a comfortable hotel.

Old House With Lots of Character”
Very friendly and helpful hosts (owner and manager), quiet at night, true Sri Lankan traditional house
I would recommend this place for a traveler who really wants to experience and learn about traditional Sri Lankan culture and stay in a historic property with a homestay feel, and values that above convenience or luxury. To be honest, I would not recommend it for someone who wants more of a luxury or boutique hotel experience with all mod cons. It is, after all, a 260 year old property. Bathroom facilities (in-room shower, toilet, sink) were basic but clean and adequate. I had major issues charging some of my electrical devices in the antiquated sockets, and the antique locks can be difficult to negotiate. There is no AC, but I found that the ceiling fan and the house's stone construction and high ceilings kept the rooms comfortably cool. The front door is locked at 10 PM, and it's about a 20 minute walk from the Fort, hot during the day and poorly lit at night (though tuk-tuks are readily available), so not the best place for someone who needs to be near the action in the Fort or who plans to stay out late. But I found it a very quiet, relaxing place to stay and enjoyed talking with the owner and manager, who shared not only the history of the house but many aspects of Sri Lankan culture and history with their guests. I stayed here after the end of a cycling tour, where we saw beautiful scenery and stayed in some stunning hotels, but had little contact with local residents, so found the change of pace very refreshing.

We wanted to stay somewhere different, and this place certainly is! It has an amazing atmosphere due to its age. The furniture, layout and grounds of the house are fascinating, and the owner took us on a tour explaining it's history. If you want something with lots of soul, stay here. Amazing.

Very welcoming and helpful staff; tastefully decorated rooms with quirky antique furniture; bathroom clean but water not quite hot enough for my preference; no air conditioning but stayed in December so ceiling fan was sufficient - might be a different story in May.

Lovely old mansion a short walk from Fort”
              History, balcony room, friendly staff
This is a 200-year-old mansion, part of which has recently become a hotel and part is becoming a museum that the owner and part-time resident can show you around. The Saffron room, which we had, appears to be the best, with a lovely four-poster bed and mosquito net, a spacious bathroom and a wonderful balcony looking onto the garden to watch the birds, the resident raccon-like animal and monkeys in the trees beyond the high wall. Breakfast, which varied each day for us, is taken in an open-windowed side room of the main house. It's by a fairly busy road but still remain calm. (I'm a light sleeper but slept fine). The manager was very helpful and the staf (not many people, given the limited number of rooms) were friendly. We only booked here because our preferred hotel in the old Fort had no rooms, but we were glad we ended up at Atapattu. Recommended.

              Staff, Location, Heritage experience
We will remember our stay here primarily because of the house itself! The owners have gone to great lengths to preserve the originality of this 260 year-old property - in fact, the owner also took us for a detailed tour around the house explaining the various stories related to the house & the period it was built in. Overall, it was a comfortable stay - breakfast was good and given that Galle fort was nearby, location wasn't too bad either. Definitely an option for those looking for the authentic Sri Lankan experience!

Location, Hotel staff & owner and Amenities
Me and my husband had visited Galle in August 2014 for 3 nights after staying at Mt. Lavinia and Hikkaduwa for 3 nights each. We accidentally chanced upon this beautiful heritage property at Agoda which is resplendent with history, art & architecture splendour. The owner Mr. Janaka Goonetilleke and his staff were very warm and made our stay pleasant. We had some wonderful meals and conversations with Mr. Goonetilleke and our stay here was so relaxing and rejuvenating after all the beach activites we did earlier that we barely moved out of the house during our 3 days stay. There isnt anyways much to see in Galle except for the Fort. We left from there with a lot of fond memories and would love to visit Atapattu Wallawa again soon for a soothing experience.

It was a honour to stay in this beautifully preserved Sri Lankan house, staff were so attentive, the pool was delightful if was a real find and the perfect base for a visit to Galle.
If you’re interested in architecture and history this is the place for you, a traditional grand & historic Sri Lankan house which has been meticulously restored by the owner whose family have been there since year dot, this has been done without eradicating the feel of a grand colonial home, this is combined with courteous and attentive staff set in beautiful surroundings. Value for money I would give it 10/10, it’s a 10min walk from the centre of Galle but you can request a tuck-tuck if you don’t want to walk. The new pool was a nice surprise as we didn’t realise there was one. Breakfast can be western of Sri Lankan both of which were very good, we stayed in one night for dinner and again had lovely food. It really is a gem and the most fascinating place we stayed on our 3 week trip.
