Set only 25km from Colombo, the Sri Lankan city of Gampaha is a great escape from the big city and good base for exploring the area. Reaching this destination is made easy thanks to the Bandaranaike International Airport
being located in the city of Katunayake.
There is much to be discovered in Gampaha and the surrounding cities. One of the oldest train stations in Sri Lanka – the Henarathgoda train station – is now the Department of Archaeology and can give a peek into the past. There is also the Henarathgoda Botanical Garden
that can make for a great day out. The surrounding areas provide some wonderful sites to visit. The city of Negombo is nicknamed Little Rome and features Roman Catholic churches, a fort, and the Hamilton Canal. Escapes into the natural element can be had at such sites as the Muthurajawela Wetland Reserve and NARA Mangrove Sanctuary.
Be sure to check out the interactive map of Gampaha for information on hotel locations, attractions, and must-see destinations.
