More about Kupang

The island of Timor was once shared between the Dutch in the west and the Portuguese in the east. Today, the island’s division remains but is controlled by the independent country of East Timor and Indonesia. Indonesia’s western region of Timor is known as the province of East Nusatenggara. The provinces capital, Kupang, was known during World War II for being a refueling and landing hub for long-haul flights. Historic sites, great views, and a fascinating culture await those who disembark from El Tari Airport.

One of the greatest times to visit the city of Kupang is during the Sail Indonesia event. Yachts from Darwin tie up at the harbor while local attractions get into full swing. The senses are treated to a wonderful away of aromas and colors within a very festive atmosphere. Places to check out while here include the Museum of Nusatenggara in the Walikota section and the Dutch cemetery. East of the Tenau Seaport is the monkey forest which is undoubtedly a must-visit, especially with monkeys here being a bit calmer than those you find in Bali. Visiting surrounding areas is a great way to explore the land. Surfers can head to Rote’s Nemberala, and the fishing village of Oesapa provides insight into the daily lives of the local fisherman.

Homestays, hotels, and other accommodation options can be selected from within the city center or along the coast. Find the most suitable accommodation for you by clicking on our interactive map and exploring Kapung for hotels and must-see destinations.
