Traveler impressions of Makassar

More about Makassar

Makassar is the largest city and capital of the province of South Sulawesi. The city is easily accessed via Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, which serves as an important hub connecting Makassar to the rest of the major cities in Indonesia, as well as some international flights in the region.

Getting around this city is easily done by taxi or the local transportation method, often much cheaper than a regular taxi and usually more interesting to travel the way the locals usually do. The city surrounds a beautiful stretch of beach called Losari Beach, and this area serves as the most central part of the city center. Most of the hotels, restaurants, and entertainment attractions of Makassar are concentrated along Losari Beach.

From Makassar Port, it’s easy to catch a boat to the surrounding islands, especially recommended for those looking for the idyllic beach vacation. The islands of Khayangan and Samalona are both less than an hour’s sailing from Makassar, and present pristine white sands and clear waters, perfect for diving or relaxing by the seaside.

Giving a glimpse into the country’s colonial history, Fort Rotterdam is an interesting site to explore for those who are interested in a little more historical and cultural exposure. As the place is also an attraction for locals, it’s a great way to interact with the city's residents as well as other travelers. Hotels near Fort Rotterdam are also conveniently located near the city center, with many of them offering waterfront resorts within walking distance to the rest of the sites in the city center.

There’s much more to see and do around Makassar, and the interactive map on this page is a great way to explore where the rest of the hotels, attractions, and must-see destinations can be found.
