Traveler impressions of Phnom Penh

More about Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia, and is quickly becoming a popular destination in Southeast Asia, especially among travelers who are interested in exploring the city’s haunting past, as well as its moving religious and historical sites.

The history of Phnom Penh is as old as it is rich. The name of the city comes from the name of a woman who found ancient Buddhist relics on a nearby hill, which then became the site of Wat Phnom, the most important temple in the area. This is a good place to begin a tour of the city center, which includes the regal Royal Palace and an impressive collection of French colonial architecture. Boutique hotels in Phnom Penh are on the rise, with many housed in these century-old colonial gems.

Going further out of the central area will lead tourists to somber sites related to Cambodia’s turbulent past, including the Killing Fields, Tol Sleng Detention Camp, and the Genocide Museum. The history of Cambodia is somberly displayed in these places, and while they’re not exciting vacation destinations, they are certainly worth seeing.

Under the Khmer Rouge, Phnom Penh was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Today, the city is enthusiastically repairing what once was lost, and staying in a centrally-located Phnom Penh hotel gives tourists the chance to experience this excitement firsthand. Phnom Penh is poised to someday become a leader in Southeast Asian tourism.

Phnom Penh is served by Phnom Penh International Airport, which is located just seven kilometers from the city center.
