Traveler impressions of Pretoria

More about Pretoria

The administrative capital of South Africa, Pretoria is a city of history, commerce, and industry. The city is easily accessible from Johannesburg, where international travelers fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport. From there, it’s a simple hour-long train ride to Pretoria. The Gauteng region in which the city is located is well connected by highways, so coming in by road is also an option. A well-connected public transportation network ensures easy access to the sites of the city.

When in Pretoria, taking a step back in time is one of the greatest ways to explore. Friends of the Rail operates a steam train that circles the city, and the Klitsgras Drumming Circle in the bush makes for a unique experience. Monuments and museums allow the traveler to immerse themselves into the culture of South Africa. The architecture of Voortrekker Monument is quite the sight and boasts a frieze that depicts the Great Trek and the daily life of the people. The Union Buildings are an impressive sight and considered an architectural masterpiece. Terraced gardens surround this seat of the South African government which has stood for more than a hundred years. Outdoor activities include trips to nature reserves and bird sanctuaries.

Finding a place to stay in the city is fairly easy thanks to the abundance of accommodation ranging from budget properties on Arcadia Street to executive residences in the central business district.
