I've travelled a lot, both on a budget and with a bit of luxury and Maru Maru is a great value. It's pleasant, attractive, clean and the staff are very friendly. The location is great and the rooftop restaurant is perfect at sunset.
One of the best!”
A real treat - highly recommended hotel. All the staff are first class, as is the food (even if they have run out of a particular item and you request and sadly, no one remembers). The gym is great as is the views from the roof. The doorman, is a real character and top bloke. The place is spotlessly clean and I would stay here again, if I returned. The hotel is the best location, in the heart of Stone Town. Brickbats: asked the Hotel about scooter hire, and no reply.
End of season trip to Zanzibar”
Took Wifey to Afica as a birthday treat, we went to Kenya then on to Zanzibar, We stayed for two nights at Maru Maru. It felt a little deserted as it was end of season, but all services were quite acceptable. The only issue we had was that at about 04.00 our A/C dumped lots of water all over the floor and our gear, we were offered an alternate room but changing rooms halfway through the night is not really acceptable is it! There was no offer made of discount/compensation. Food was reasonably priced and that was reflected in the quality. It was a pity that smoking was allowed inside the hotel!
Excellent hotel for Sauti za Busara festival”
I came to Zanzibar for the Sauti za Busara festival. The Maru Maru Hotel is right next to the Old Fort, where the festival is held. Location was excellent, the room was clean and spacious, solid wifi, good breakfast.
Loved this place! Wish we had stayed longer! Highly recommend”
Really nice place - great decor, good facilities, lovely staff. Additional bed provided at no extra charge. Fantastic location. There is an extension going on but guests are totally unaffected. The only thing we weren't happy about was the cost of the walking tour arranged through the hotel!
Lovely hotel in a perfect location”
This hotel was in the perfect location to see the sights of Stone Town being walking distance from all of them. The room was comfortable and the food and service at the rooftop bar and restaurant excellent. You can't beat the view of the sunset from the roof. As it was the last night of a 2 month trip to East Africa it was a good location to do some shopping to pick up some gifts and souvenirs with plenty of shops nearby. Couldn't fault my stay there and got a great deal when booking so it was great value for money.
Well located base in Stonetown”
A good medium budget hotel, well located close to the old fort and the house of wonders. It's rooftop restaurant and bar offer wonderful views across the city. The rooms are clean, somewhat sparse in detail. Con is the price of meals, the portions are small. There are better options for meals, go out and explore.
+ location could not be better 5-10mins away from ferry port on Mizingani Rd, the old fort & very close to the street bazaars & some excellent restaurants. Rooms were very clean & spacious. Rooftop bar has amazing views also. -Not the cheapest hotel but worth the extra. Adequate food at the restaurant but much better available elsewhere. Service could be slow at times so keep your pole pole mentality!
Good Accommodation ”
After many nights in hostels on the beach it was a great change of environment at maru maru. The room was exactly as on the pictures, very clean and spacious. I needed a doctor and they sent one straight to my room which was convenient. The music on the rooftop was rather mediocre and the breakfast buffet disorganized. Staff was helpful but not the most friendly. All in all it was a good stay in a great location in Stone Town. Because of the great deal on Agoda we payed way less than what they usually charge. I wouldn’t say it is worth it for full price.
Clean, Safe, Excellent Location - Would Stay Again”
From the moment I walked into Maru Maru (soaking wet from a surprise rain burst), they were incredibly kind and efficient. I was welcomed with a refreshing cold towel and watermelon juice. I was brought up to my room off of the gorgeous fountain, and the staff member made sure I had the front desk number and the hours of the rooftop restaurant. They offered turn down service and stored my bag for me for a few hours after I checked out. The location was unbeatable - I walked every where in Stone Town and felt safe, even at night. Also, the bathroom was clean and the shower was hot.
The hotel was clean for stone town! It is veryquite after 10 pm. I would definitely go back there. ”
Bathroom great all the necessary was there - soap, shampoo, towels etc. Room was very clean, I was honestly impressed. In stone town you don’t find many hotels that are that great. Breakfast was good. Elevator doesn’t work after midnight....... but Definitely value for money.
For the amount of money that i paid, I got more than I deserved. Very clean hotel, comfortable beds and an amazing breakfast spread which was free to me. The location is perfect as well. Book quickly, you won't regret
Good location , Clean room”
Good location to walk around in Stone town, wifi available in the room with strong signal and room was clean & spacious. Breakfast was good and we enjoyed ourselves at their open air lounge with live band.
Fantastic Stone Town hotel, stay here!”
This place is wonderful. We spent our first night in a different hotel in Stone Town which was just terrible and left as soon as we could the following morning. Moved to Maru Maru which was like heaven, it put the biggest smiles on our faces after a rough night. You definitely want a clean, comfortable, well maintained, modern hotel in Stone Town to relax after spending your days in the hot hustle and bustle. The only thing we can fault it on is the noise we could hear from our room at night - we were directly under the restaurant kitchen so got the noise of pots and pans plus the live music at night. But I'd prefer to put ear plugs in to sleep any day than stay in a less comfortable, less clean place. Maybe ask for a room as far away from the rooftop noise as possible. Regardless, would absolutely stay again and 100% recommend to family and friends.
Great location, comfortable, pricey”
I haven't been to Zanzibar for 11 years and was shocked how much prices have gone up. We paid US prices for less than US standard of service. Our first night we were told breakfast was included. When we each got charged for it, a total of $40 for our four person group, we of course went right to the front desk, who acknowledged they had told us breakfast was included. When we shared that we were charged, they showed no interest in reversing the charge and just shrugged their shoulders. I'm used to the laid back island/Swahili culture and would have just brushed this off, but when my companions pointed out we were paying high costs for low service, I did get rather annoyed. Everyone makes mistakes, and there were a few other examples of mistakes made by staff that would have been fine if they were more willing to correct them. The staff are pleasant and friendly and want to be helpful, I suspect this penny pinching comes from the management. We were otherwise comfortable and happy with our stay.
Great location to restaurants, shops, the port, and Forodhani Gardens. The staff was very friendly and helpful with questions and coordination. The rooftop restaurant view was beautiful and the food was yummy. Upon arrival, the hotel even gave a free voucher for a free cocktail, a nice bonus. Also, small pastries were left in my room in the evening time, which was a sweet surprise. Overall great stay, will visit again
Nice vacation ”
It was our first time in Zanzibar and we enjoy it a lot. The location is good, with a nice view of the stone city from the terrace, close to all the shops and restaurants, room was clean, staff is friendly, so we had a great time there.
Great hotel in good location with friendly staff”
We had a great stay at Maru Maru Hotel. All rooms are clean, the staff very friendly. Loved the rooftop for sundowner drinks. International menu with good choice, but definitely best is the indian food there. We can absolutely recommend this place to everyone who is looking for a clean and modern hotel in the heart of Stone Town.
Nice centrally located hotel”
Good stay overall. Room was nice, but furnishings were relatively okay. Had problems with water pressure in the shower and toilets. Roof top restaurant is nice, though there is room for improvement in service. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Would recommend it as a very good option to consider in stone town
I loved my stay at the Maru Maru, the staff were all so friendly and kind, from the person who picked me up from the airport, to the front desk staff, to the cleaners. The hotel is immaculate, is is always kept very clean. The room, was no different, the bed and pillows were so comfortable and the softest sheets! A huge breakfast selection which was always tasty. The rooftop has great views, a really good place for a happy hour cocktail or beer and watch the sunset. Live music, or DJ most nights on the rooftop. This place is a true gem in Stone Town
