The Fernery Lodge and Chalets
A beautiful setting”
You have to drive 6-7 km on bumpy dirt roads to get to The Fernery but it is so worth it. Everything is designed to maximize views of the beautiful gorge, waterfalls and ocean, as well as the surrounding forests. They've also built little lookout points at various points so you can walk around and take in the views from a variety of vantage points. The rooms and cabins are beautifully appointed and the staff is so gracious and accommodating, it was just a pleasure. A wonderful place to just relax, enjoying the birds, butterflies, outdoor jacuzzi, games room etc. but it's also a 45 minute drive to hikes and water activities in Tsitsikamma. Highly recommended.
Beautifully appointed chalets in a perfect setting. Stunning views of river, sea and fern forests. Staff very attentive . Enjoyed an excellent dinner. Highly recommended if you are looking for the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
outstanding quiet and beautiful”
quiet luxury, outstanding nature views
Enjoyed our stay but sadly no view at all from our room. Breakfast was good, dinner average.
The only downside to this hotel is the 6km dirt track to reach it. The well equipped room, staff, dining room and food were great.
We really enjoyed our stay at The Fernery Lodge. We had the Owners Suite and it was quite indulgent! After almost a month of staying in some very basic accomodations, we knew this was going to be a bit more opulent - and it didn't disappoint! The views are amazing, and the suite consisted of two levels, the entrance level was bedroom and bathroom, with beautiful, strong shower, and lovely bathtub. The downstairs was a living room and almost fully self catering kitchen. I only say almost as there was a little bit of a lack in plates and cutlery (but this was really only a minor inconvenience for us). The living room also had a lovely fireplace. Both levels led out to a beautiful balcony where you could hear birds singing, and the wonderfully soothing sounds of the waterfalls and ocean. We used the braai for two of the three nights, and ate at the restaurant on the other night. The staff were delightful, and always willing to help out with any questions we had! We loved it!
Thank you so much for such a great review. We hope you will be back to enjoy the Fernery again. Wishing you the best for 2019. Kind regards, Diane
The road to the hotel is a little rough, but you are rewarded by immaculate grounds, spacious rooms, and beautiful scenery. The staff is excellent.
Greetings Thank you so much for such a good review. We look forward to warmly welcoming you back. All the best for 2019.
A peaceful retreat”
Pros Beautiful scenery. Surrounding sounds of nature was immensely relaxing. Clean, comfy cottage. Fireplace was the highlight. Thank You for a beautiful stay. Cons- I found the 10am checkout a little early & the shower clogged slightly when both the his & hers were in use. The gravel road to & from the Lodge was longer & bumpier than expected especially in a small car. Other than those minor grievances, a wonderful stay.
Good morning and warm greetings. We want to thank you sincerely for this great review. Your comments were addressed and we have also graded the road, ensuring a less bumpy drive. Looking forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards, Diane
Beautiful views in the middle of nature ”
Great one night stay, it’s a bit of a drive in on a dirt road but once you get there you get beautiful views over the cliffs to the ocean, rooms are nicely designed, fantastic dinner at a very reasonable price. Staff are very helpful. Highly recommend.
Thank you so much Sandra, and we do hope you will be able to visit again. Regards, Diane
Perfect place to escape the busy city life.
Good day and warm greetings. A great way to describe the Fernery. We guarantee peace and tranquility. Thanks for being such a great guest. We look forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards, Diane
Has amazing views to the oacen and waterfall, very quiet. Breakfast was great. Dinner was ok. The downside is wifi only available in the bar and reception. Access to the place was not eassy.
Greetings Thank you for your review and positive comments. We are in the process of providing wifi to the chalets which may take a bit of time but will be available in time. Best wishes and thank you, again. Diane
Lovely stay - Beautiful location, great service”
The hotel is situated at the end of a long forest road in splendid isolation, and the pictures tell the story. Perched high on a cliff overlooking the mouth of the river, with waterfalls outside the restaurant. Fantastic. We had a lovely room with a sea view. This meant we were by the main hotel rather than in a cottage up the river, and woke up to a beautiful view. The restaurant serves good food. Be warned though that if you get there late, there is really no option for dinner elsewhere - it is at the end of a forest road. We were glad we had rung ahead to say we’d be there at 9pm, and pre-ordered a main course (as the kitchen closes for new orders at 9). Service was excellent. We sadly only had one night here, but said to each other that if we were to come back to the area we would definitely stay here again.
Greetings! What a great review. Thank you. We particularly love welcoming our return guests and hope that you will manage another stay and recall the special memories. All the best. Diane
Amazing location - wish we could have been there longer”
The drive there was a little ominous, but as soon as we arrived we were greeted so kindly and taken to our amazing chalet. It was so big we couldn’t believe it. The views at dinner and from the bar were stunning and we never wanted to leave. The food was excellent and very good value. Breakfast was nice and low key. We didn’t have any time to do anything around the hotel the next day so left wanting more which is always good. Would highly recommend!
Warm greetings Anna Thank you sincerely for such a great and descriptive review. We hope that you will most definitely be back and next time, for a longer stay. Wishing you all the best. Diane
A spectacular location with first class service”
The lodge and some of the rooms have the most remarkable view over a gorge with a series of small waterfalls running down to the sea. The rooms are extremely comfortable and generously appointed. The food was excellent, as was the service in the dining room. There was a glitch with our booking (a mismatch between the room as described and as provided) but that has been addressed. We would recommend this place to anyone – the prices are fully justified and we hope to return.
Greetings Penelope Although this response is belated, it is nevertheless most sincere. Thank you indeed for this great review and for having chosen to be our guest. It would be wonderful if you could visit again and spend more time with us. Once again, many thanks. Kind regards, Diane
Confusing staff, disappointing kitchen but lovely rooms. Mind the bad smell around the facilities.
Good day and warm greetings from The Fernery Your review is appreciated and as we value each guest, no comment or feedback is ignored. As we are situated in a dairy farming area, this malodourous smell may have been from them. Our apologies for what we can unfortunately not avoid. Travel safely. Kind regards, Diane
My bf and I loved this lodge. It is a bit hidden so finding it after 10 pm due to a delayed flight and 2 hour drive from port Elizabeth wasn't a piece of cake. Gps doesn't locate it. Overall we loved the whole feel of the lodge, it felt very quaint, providing us with a magnificent view of the Indian Ocean. We opted for the owners suite as oppose to the chalet, given we already stayed in chalets for our safari. The room was very clean and spacious, we had an ensuite to the living room, fire place with a kitchen. We had open balcony as well. We stayed two nights October 6 to 8th so weather was still chilly at night. Breakfast was simple but good and dinner was satisfying! The lodge definitely met our expectations, we went for a jog around the lodge vast grounds and even tested out the early evening jaccuzi overlooking the mountains. Location wise, it takes around 20 to 25 mins to get to storms river by car.
Good morning and warm greetings Thank you most sincerely for your very descriptive review of The Fernery and favourable comments. We do have a great advantage with these stunning views, but are dedicated and passionate in ensuring all aspects are on point. Good to know we succeed. Travel safely. Kind regards, Diane
There is a spectacular view from most rooms which are very spacious. The problem is that the place as a whole is run down. The special touch you expect when you pay this price is not there. Furniture is old and not conform with modern taste. No feeling of luxury.
Good day Thank you for this review. I am happy to let you know that The Fernery has had many upgrades and introduced a beautiful new suite since your visit. Our rooms are spruced up, luxurious and contemporary. Thank you for having chosen to stay with us, and we do hope sincerely you will be a guest again in the future. Kind regards, Diane
Beautiful place to stay”
It's a bit far from the main road but with good facilities and beautiful view. Love to spend a day or tow there
Greetings! Yes, with this guaranteed peace and tranquility, we agree that two or three nights is best. Thank you so much for this favourable review. Kind regards Diane
amazing place, verry comfortable and spacious, incredible spot our best place!
Greetings Wow! What a great review. We so appreciate this and especially our 10 score! Please do come again when next you visit South Africa. Kind regards, Diane
Best choice in Tsitsikamma ”
There's a 8 km dirt road drive off the highway but it's worth it! The views are spectacular. Staff is very friendly and rooms are nice and clean.
Greetings What a great review. We thank you for this recommendation and that you took the trouble to review The Fernery. Please come again. Kind regards from The Fernery team.
