Disappointed ”
PROs: The staff (there is only one) is accommodating/friendly on our requests. Breakfast is self-served in the kitchen. Location is accessible to teksi (water taxi) going to town proper. There is a convenience store beside the hotel & restaurant infront of it. Overall, the place is quiet coz I guess not a lot of guests booked there. CONs: The kitchen is SO FILTHY! the caretaker should clean the sink, appliances, utensils and the fridge. Especially the jam and bread stock if its being kept away from cockcroach, fly & ants. The lightings in the bedroom (standard) are blurry/poor. Good thing, we were upgraded to another room when bathroom lights (standard room) malfunctions.

refurbished building”
from the exterior it looks new but some parts of the interiors are refurbished. Value for money for Brunei prices. the room is big and the pantry is quite well stocked.20-30 mins. walking from the waterfront since there is practically no public transport in Brunei. this hotel is a self service hotel as the reception desk is usually empty but everything is conveniently placed even maps and bus schedules so no need really to ask.

Poor location; poor security; no staff”
As far as the room is concerned, it was spacious and good overall. The wifi worked well enough in the room, and since I didn’t have a local sim since I was only in BSB for 2 days, this was helpful! The location, however, is too far from BSB city centre, so there is really nothing around this area. BSB city center is reachable by water taxi and the pier for the water taxi is a 10 min walk away from the hotel. Breakfast is available all day and it’s self-serve – just cereal, oatmeal, bread, coffee, tea. The pantry has the things you need so you just make yourself breakfast then clean up after yourself. All of this was fine, but for me, it was a bit uncomfortable staying here as I barely saw anyone at the hotel; it’s an odd atmosphere. I know there were a couple of other guests here as I saw some going in & out. But no one is ever at reception nor any staff present (you have to phone them if you need anything) and the place didn’t feel secure. The front door is always unlocked & open. This security became an issue for me when someone here gave my room # to a local “tour guide”, who ended up bothering me, knocking on my door, late at night then into the early morning hours! Long story short, I met this “tour guide” earlier in the day in BSB & he talked to me for only a few minutes. He was giving a boat tour & was with 1 female guest & their boat happened to stop next to my boat. I was traveling solo. I was surprised to later find this “tour guide” at my hotel door so I asked him how he found my room. He said people at this hotel know him & said I was his guest (which I’m not) so they gave him my room number. From my experience, this is not how normally guesthouses, hostels or hotels work, in order to ensure safety of their guests, and I’ve stayed in lots of places. If there is someone looking for a guest, that person should wait while reception/hotel staff talks to the hotel guest directly. But that’s not how it was for this hotel. So for this security

Doesn't meet my expectation”
After check-in, I could not find the front desk staff, can only Whatsapp them to ask but they are quite responsive so it was fine. When I checked out, they came to take the key and disappeared again. The kitchen really needs renovation, utensils looks a bit dirty. The room is clean but has "old house" smell, the air-con and fan are a bit noisy. BUT this hostel is very close to Pabo Soto (1 of the must-try soto restaurant in Brunei), able to walk to Brunei centre (Bandar bus station) and a few museums. They also offers free use of washing machine (though the machine cannot automatically get the water in and sounds as loud as an airplane is taking off or landing).

More throughout cleaning could be done”
Room size and bathroom space was quite decent. Kinda dusty on some parts of the floor, the bed smells, slightly clogged bathroom sink drain. The location is few kilometers away from many of the places of interest but it is not recommended to walk on foot, as the roads heading to town were narrow and did not have walkway for pedestrians. There were buses (number 39) passing by at the front of the hotel entrance, or if you prefer to get an "unlicensed" taxi, the staffs were very helpful to call in a "taxi sapu" for you.

Not as described”
We chose this hotel knowing it was out of town because it supplied breakfast. However, the breakfast was just bread. No butter or jam! The kitchen was also dirty and there were used tea bags in with the other tea bags! Room was dirty and very dated, did not feel clean. We couldn't wait to leave. Terrible value for money, even in Brunei.

Ok place to stay on a budget”
Easy to find from airport - buses are easy to navigate and locals knew the hotel. Wifi was slow but worked - shower was cold - beds uncomfortable and felt like could break at any point. Cheap to get around on a taxi boat - too humid to walk into town and prob a bit far - not much round the hotel although there is a supermarket. Make sure you take toilet roll everywhere including hotel as none available. Pleasant stay and good when on a budget

Loved this Place! Relaxing ”
I loved my stay at Apek Utama -- it was relaxing and charming. The rooms are excellent and large for the price. The family who runs it is lovely & they also own a good local restaurant across the street. There's another restaurant on the waterfront that's quite good, and a grocery store that's open until 10 pm. The wifi is good & they have a 24 hour kitchen stocked with bread and cereal. The only potential downside is the location: it's about 2 km from BSR. Fortunately, there's a water taxi across the street & you can walk if necessary. Overall, my stay was super relaxing and I had a great time. My favorite part was their tiny kittens that lived in the garage-- so cute and happy!

Great price for Brunei but the hotel should be updated”
Accommodation in Brunei is very expensive so finding this hotel was great. It is located 2km from the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan. There is a 1$ local bus (no. 39) that until 6pm stops just in front of Apek Utama. You can even walk. It is some 20min easy walk to the centre. Room was big but it looked much nicer on the photos. The photos were done long time ago. This hotel shows its age all over it, from common areas to the rooms. Painting pealing from the wall, worn sofas, old noisy air condition units, water heater in the bathroom not working etc. It should definitely be updated. Free wifi is advertised but most of the time it wasn't working. You connect but it is so slow that you can't download even a single email. Ok to stay if you are on a tight budget.

Nice hotel”
We looked at another "backpacker" g.h. downtown in a better location, which was 25% cheaper, but the room quality there was much lower than here. So we think that this place is good value for money. And the location is not so bad. We walk or hitchhike to town every day. Hitchhiking is very easy!

It was the cheapest place on the internet. A 2km walk from the main busstation in town, but you can also take bus 39. They have free coffee and thee all day long. The free breakfast was a nice welcome, but don't expect to much. We had only 1 slice of bread left for us. The room was big and clean and there is a seating area in the hallway. Shops and restaurant are close by.
