Good for one night”
Great location for the Ude Welawe National Park safaris, and the tents themselves are really lovely- more glamping than camping. The pools are also nice but the bar is severely under stocked and the food was ok but definitely not worth the high prices. Lots of families and kids in the pool so be warned if you’re looking for peace and quiet. Also very noisy overnight as tents don’t protect you from any sounds and you can literally hear everything- including the world’s noisiest swing arm barrier.

Good base for safari”
Fun concept of camping by the river. Tents had everything but hot water. Loved balcony overlooking the river to watch the birdlife. Dinner was expensive for Sri Lanka but good quality and a buffet so plenty to eat. Breakfast good too. Safari organised by hotel was well run and punctual. 15 minutes drive to the park gates. Entry fee to park plus jeep Safari is expensive so worth asking hotel if they can team you up with other guests to fill the jeep and reduce the cost.

Unique but over priced”
I enjoyed my stay here. It is quite basic though. The pool is nice and it is beautiful by the river. The internet is shockingly bad. The service is ok but nothing special. It is fun to stay in the tent but there is only one plug so you cannot charge anything while you have the fan running at night. The water is cold in the older tents and sometimes only a trickle. The nearest shop (shack) is about 3km walk away. I would probably stay somewhere else if I were in the area.

Glaming at it's best!”
Athgira was the perfect spot for our family of 5 (we had 2 tents, 3 kids in one tent, 2 adults in the other) mainly because of the pool which was welcome relief after our safari. There is not much to do in the town so 1 or 2 nights is enough. We did 4 nights and got a little bored. We enjoyed 2 1/2 safaris (one in the morning and one in the afternoon on a different day which was super interesting to see different animals) and a visit to the elephant rescue home. The highlight of Athgira was the STAFF - such a dedicated group of lovely people who went out of their way to make sure our family was comfortable.

Over-hyped 'camping' experience”
Not bad, but not worth the detour. They really overcharge for their BBQ, which is the only dinner option. Pool was nice though.

Glamping in the jungle ”
The fabulous 'tent' accommodation, pool,
I think this place is really underrated. The luxury tents are gorgeous and are spotlessly clean with a good bathroom and comfy beds. It's really glamping and a great place to stay pre safari. There's a river at the bottom and I saw a 3' ling monitor lizard creeping around it- my first sign of wildlife! The pool is fab but needs about 5 X as many sun loungers for the number of residents! Also a loungey area to mingle would be nice as otherwise everyone sits quite far from each other in the restaurant at night. The hotel organised a superb safari for the next morning on my arrival in very luxurious jeeps and I had a good guide and saw lots of elephants and wildlife. I'd recommend this place. The company also have another hotel called Athgira River Hotel and this is also lovely with very luxurious rooms and a nice pool. It's right opposite the Elepgant orphanage which is very handy and worth a visit to see cute little baby elephants at feeding time.

River Camping”
The Staff , The manager was a nice man, he enjoyed a good laugh
Ideal for a nights stay, rooms are comfortable not amazing. Everything is organised easily. Bbq,safari, private car onwards...no problem. Felt as though they made a healthy profit without charging a fortune. Watched the river rise with the afternoon rain and never saw a mosquito . Maybe the time of year or just lucky . Park was nice too .

Clamping in style.”
1. Location near to Udawalawae National Park 2. Breakfast down by the river 3. The swimming pool.
We arrived around 7 p.m. in the dark, the last 80 kms of our journey by tuc tuc which ran out of fuel on the way. Directions to this place are actually 4 km away at a restaurant of the same name/ownership. They at least provided a motorbike guide to help otherwise you would never find it. Our booking had not been received as the internet was down. That's all the negatives, thereafter we were treated wonderfully, a tent was found overlooking the river, dinner served by the recently opened swimming pool and arrangements made to go on Safari the next morning. The food is excellent we had Cuury & Rice washed down with Lion larger. The following morning at 05.45 we were served tea before our guide took us on the most amazing Safari into Udawalawe National Park, returning to the campsite around 9.30 a.m. We were ushered down to the river to our table for two, complete with tablecloth, exotic fruit platter and chilled juice. Cooked omelette followed with Ceylon tea / coffee and toasts including a local coconut roti. Just fabulous. We spent the morning in the pool, the best in Sri Lanka, swimming under the shade of Palm trees before checking out to visit the Elephant Transit Hospital. If you like camping then you will love this place, if you don't like bugs and insist on air conditioning then book elsewhere!

Fun but overpriced, dirty pool”
Fabulous food, beautiful location, tents are a novelty and quite comfortable.
We mostly enjoyed our stay but I do have 3 downsides to point out. One is, there is a beautiful pool but it looked too murky to swim in. We did not see anyone cleaning it either. Two is, when we were there, there were several tour groups coming and going. This was noisy since the groups are loud and so are their buses. Three is the overpriced food. It is truly excellent food and service but the price was astronomical relative to Sri Lankan norms. We asked for a bottle of water as we were leaving and they didn't charge us for it, and we didn't think of paying in all the distraction of getting into the rickshaw. They actually called the driver 10 minutes later and asked to speak to us and told us we owed them 220 rupees for the water. We had to send it back with the driver. Given that we had mandatorily spent 2,000 rupees each on dinner the night before, this seemed somewhat petty. If you are prepared for this sort of money grabbing, though, and you're not much of a swimmer, it is an atmospheric place to stay with very good service.

'Camping' by the river and safari”
beautiful setup, swimming in the river, very comfy tents
We stayed one night, before doing a nice little safari in Udawawele national park. All was arranged easily, on short notice. The site is beautifully located on the river. Swimming is nice. Dinner and breakfast were good. Price for dinner and safari were on the high side.

"Luxury Camping" - you get what you pay for”
The adventurous vibe, the river-side locations, and the easy morning ride to the Safari park
It was what you might expect. Nicer "glamping" conditions than I expected, much nicer than many of the "glamping" sites I went to on my Kenyan or other East African Safaris... but much the same vibe. Rustic, in the middle of the jungle. BUT... each "tent" had working toilets, showers, sinks... the beds had mosquito nets, the tents were large enough to hang out in - and there was a seating area on the balcony to have a late-night drink and read in the wilderness. I wouldn't want to stay for too many nights --- but it was definitely a worthwhile experience.
