Once a gem of the Mediterranean, Beirut is now a shamble of a city. Though you can uncover the beauty of a glorious past, you cannot but feel sadness for a chaotic city with ruins everywhere, and not the good ancient ones.
Truly divided according to religion and sect, there is no sense of civil duty or solidarity among its people. It seems everyone has their own Beirut, and their own Lebanon, and it is mostly not a pretty one. I would like for this city to get up and shine again, but it won't happen by just catering to rich tourists with money. Beirut can be a beautiful place again without the "everything is for sale" tag.
Very interesting place - the city centre is a crazy mix of bullet ridden abandoned buildings and spectacular new apartment blocks, interspersed with huge building sites.
It seems generally there isn't a huge amount to see in the city, and I think you'd struggle for more than 4-5 days. But for eating, nightlife and relaxation its a great place. The people of Beirut are wonderful, very welcoming. Except for taxi drivers who seem intent to rip you off - don't hail taxis on the street, call a taxi service like Allo, they're much better and fairer with fares.
What a wonderful city. You can get by cheap or you can spend a lot of money. You can have a great vacation for less, it is all up to where you are going to eat.
Fantastic food - from snack bars to fancy restaurants. Very clean city. Beautiful sea views. Lovely walks through Downtown neighborhoods and Hamra district.
Easy to communicate. Good place for exercise along the waterfront. Heavy traffic on some streets. Friendly taxi drivers, sometimes stopping for coffee and giving the passenger some, too. Not far from Jounieh, where there are so many fun places and also a huge religious shrine to Mary, Our Lady of Lebanon.
Beirut is amazing, the vibrant city has so much to offer. There is so much to do in Beirut, it caters for people from all walks of life.
Beirut is also very popular for its night life, I highly recommend a night out at Pier 7 and White.
Very vibrant city. Great nightlife and eating out culture. Friendly people. great weather. Clean and gives a Mediterrannean feel.
An ancient city with plenty of sight seeing place. Lebanese is very friendly and the foods are superb.
The weather is lovely and I would love to come back to this city for second visit.
Good atmosphere and good Arabian and Western food available. Excellent security and nice people too.
