"To find the hotel do not trust the TomTom GPS database! The hotel is located in a very quiet area. It is a very nice castle. We had a two room appartement in the tower, one room with double bed and one with a single bed. We paid the rate for two persons, but we were allowed to use both beds for same price. The dinner was very good and worth the money, but the breakfast buffet for € 14.00 per day was rather poor."

"Right on the banks of the river in the beautiful town of Brantome this was a last minute decision to stay here after an excellent lunch! Agoda were brilliant in agreeing to set back the hotel I had booked in Angouleme until the following night and booked me into The Charbonnel for that night. I am sure I actually got the best room in the hotel (room 40) with a balcony over the river for me to throw bread crumbs to the ducks from. There is no lift and this is top floor so not recommended for anyone who may not be capable of a couple of flights of stairs. The hotel is typical of an elderly French hotel, don’t expect designer bathrooms or air conditioning but I really enjoyed my stay there. I also used their laundry service which was excellent. One thing about Brantome, there are a number of café’s; bars and restaurants to choose from but as one who loves my food and has a wine cellar built up over 40 years I usually check out the menus and ask locals for recommendations and decided to eat just around the corner at “Perigord Vert” which is also a hotel and has a new swimming pool in the front. However I was very annoyed that when I walked up to the restaurant through his crunchy gravel drive a guy dressed very casually stepped in front of me, I side stepped him but he then stepped in front of me again, I looked at him and asked, “Do you work here?” and he replied curtly, “Can I help you?” Wondering why a nice hotel/restaurant doesn’t dress its staff correctly, I said, “Oh, yes I’d like a table for one please”. He looked disappointed and asked, “Are you alone – just for one?” And I said “Yes”, to which he said, “No”. I looked at the virtually empty restaurant and said, “What – you are full?” And he said “Yes - unless you have a reservation?” Of course I didn’t so I wandered off. I then had a lovely meal back on the terrace restaurant and thought I’ll walk off my meal and walked back past the Perigor Vert to see that the place was still virtually empty! "

"Stayed one night and ate in the "michelin star" restaurant in July 2009 for our 25th anniversary. The food was out of this world and I stated in the "pros" box the staff were so friendly and could not do enough. Fireworks were planned for bastille day the day after our stay but they brought them forward as they knew there was a storm on the way. Watching them from the terrace was fantastic."
