Crete is an amazing island. If you like beaches, they have that, but as a student of archaeology, I love to travel here because of all the Minoan sites.
We staged in a little studio in Chania. Then moved onto a 5* all inclusive hotel. The studio was cheaper, but both worked out exactly the same overall.
Which did I prefer, the picturesqur studio in the centre of Chania old town.
Its a beautifully diverse island with everything - from archeological heritage sites to hiking trails & grand mountains to beautiful beaches.
I had the most amazing honeymoon in Crete. Totally loved it!!!!
We stayed in Heraklion but should have stayed in Chania, which we found to be very pretty, with lots of restaurants and activities.
We also did not have the chance to visit olive farms, which should be interesting.
Crete is a big island, it is diverse, you have historical places, nature and national parks, beaches, old towns, shopping etc.
Take your time, pay some respect to the history of the place, more recently the WWII, pay respect to the Allied Forces and the fighting spirits of Cretans, throughout history they would not surrender to Turks or Germans, a truly proud and heroic people. They are not just Greeks but more Cretans ! Even the food is differ to mainland Greece.
My husband & I honeymooned in Greece and picked Crete for our first week. We stayed in the towns of Chania & Rethymnon.
We totally loved our stay in Crete. The Old town of Chania, the Venetian harbour & the beaches of Rethymnon made our stay absolutely memorable. I remember the evening strolls & gelato and the cool breeze. The people of Crete are extremely friendly. We went to a bakery which was owned by a couple. My husband & I ordered for a scoop of ice-cream which we planned to share. The wife had just had a surgery so she couldn't bend or do any heavy lifting. Hence the husband was doing most of the work. When we entered, she was very friendly to us. She sat down near us & chatted with us. She asked about our hometown, our honeymoon and also told us about her own life. She most generously gave us an extra scoop of ice-cream, 2 cookies each & bread rolls for no extra charge. I will never forget Katerina & Stelios. We totally loved our stay in Crete.
Crete is a beautiful island, with ancient history, and opportunities to do a lot of hiking, and outdoor activities.
The people are very friendly. It is so full of history that you need a good guide book to inform you of about each place. The food is excellent, and the Raki, a nice reward for a tough day of hiking.!!!
Super beautiful beaches, culture places and cities. The best is to rent a car and do a round trip by car.
There are a lot of special places all over the island. We recommend to stay minimum 14 days and stay a 2-3 days in each location.
All cities of crete are wonderful and its worth going. I suggest knosos for its historical greatness.
The city cetnter is very good for shopping, dinning and walking. Although, the best part of Greek islands considering Crete too, are the seaside places, the beaches and the sea.
