We have been there several times and would certainly return, if only as part of a trip further down the river into South Australia.
The sun was out the Murray was beautiful. Just sitting on the bank and watching the paddlesteamers was very relaxing.
I have visited this place on no less than 3 other occasions. I brought another couple with me specifically boasting the history and charm of the region.
I note that there are some works going on at the wharf. I am reliably told that the local council has a big say in this and that they are spending in the vicinity of 14.2 million dollars on this. May I say that it is ashame that more thought and consultation has not gone into this. Even if the council believe they have consulted they have not listened. The area is loosing it's rustic, authentic look. It seems that council sets the rental rates for the area and has forced some retailers due to the expense out e.g. the blacksmith for one which I boasted to my friend as I was sure he wanted to see this old craft. Some of the money would have been better spent restoring what was rather than modernising. Listen to the locals, visitors and those that appreciate Echuca/Moama for it's history and rustic look not changing for changes sake.
A town carved from Australian history with the old "Port area', museums and tourist area around the port itself.
The Working horse and steam rally is a must see but I fear that it has lost some of its focus on the historical importance of the horse and steam engines contribution to the areas development and developed into a comercial enterprise. The town itself is steeped in history with historic waterside hjotels and other buildings and a reasonable shopping area. The minature steam trains at Rotary Park are also an attraction that will provide fun and learning for adults and children alike. Within a short drive from the town is a very nice country race course and numerous other tourist attractions of historical significance.
The Wharf and port are great places to visit and a ride on a Paddle Steamer is great, even try the restaurant steamers for dinner or lunch.
The wineries in the area are great and there is lots to see. We continue to return there for a few days away each time.
It is very interesting to see all the historic sights. The "Port of Echuca" is a great place to visit.
Everything is within walking distance. Moama has a great market every second weekend.
