More about Hawaii The Big Island

The Island of Hawaii, the biggest island in the state of Hawaii, is simply known as the Big Island to avoid confusion between the two. The massive island city is served by two major airports, Hilo International Airport and Kona International Airport, both of which offer regular international connections from many major cities, as well as direct flights from cities on the West Coast.

The Big Island is divided into two major parts; the metropolitan Hilo and the ocean-side Kona. There are several choices of hotels on either side of the island, and getting from one side to the other is easily done by car, but visitors who are looking to take part in more of Hawaii’s beachfront activities generally look for hotels in Kona.

Hawaii is home to the most active volcano in the world, which has been continuously erupting since the 1980s. This, and the other largest volcano in the world are located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. As this area is an extremely popular tourist attraction, planning ahead and allowing ample time is advised.

Of course, a visit to Hawaii’s biggest island would be incomplete without plenty of beach hopping and quality time spent on the sand. Kua Bay is one of the most popular beaches on Kona, especially ideal for swimming and snorkeling activities. The beachfront hotels and resorts along the coastline often have some of the best access, although it’s just as possible to reach these beaches while staying in a more inner-city budget hotel.
