For me this made as a great stopover for one night going from Colombo to the southern beaches.Well connected by trains and buses, it is easily accessible by either.
It was a great place to soak in the quiet and peace of the surroundings especially if one stays in a villa either slightly further south of the town on the beach or on the other side of the road along the beach. These places are better and more quiet than the few big hotels on the beach and make for a better local experience in my mind.
Make it a point to have your meals at Avendra Hotel especially their take out restaurant offers food items which are very tasty and suitable for a budget traveller.
Its a very small town with a very quirky houses. Streets are very small. Take care when crossing or walking on the roads, it seems like the local drivers all thinking that they are on a F1 Race Track :-) Please note that in Hikkaduwa there is no pedestrian paths, everyone walks on the road, so take a good care.
Do not pet the animals. Visit the Buddha Temple if you get chance.
Apart from the obvious beach life, you can also go fishing or take part in different water sports. Also recommended is a trip inland by local Tuc-Tuc, to see how the village life is.
Beautiful scenery! 1/2 hour by tuc.tuc to the South, you can visit the old dutch colonial fort of Galle.
This is a very small town. No real nightlife around the hotel. The entertainment was made by the guests in the hotel.
Visiting each others hotels and using different bars. It made for a great atmosphere. No real shops all very basic. You need to get a train to Galle for shopping.
A rather dusty strip of tatty shops along the main Colombo/Galle Road with lots of bars and restaurants - the miles of unspoilt beach are the main attraction.
Surfers have their spots but down towards Dodanduwa the empty beach is perfect for walking, out of season May/june Hikkaduwa is very empty but I prefer that to the more crowded 'season' Dec- Feb though the sea us too rough for swimming and some of the beach 'disappears'. There are some simple restaurants with great fish and views of the crashing waves. beach accommodation tends to be shabby and over-priced with better places inland and round the lagoon and lake. If you like a lively place try Hikkaduwa in season or enjoy peace out of season. Try the local market for shopping. For posher restaurants and trendy bars go 15 k to historic Galle.
I am a travel agent in Sri Lanka and you may call on +94771849036 to arrange tours for you in Hikkaduwa.
Nice people other than beachboy troubles and similar troubles from people who try to sell/show unwanted services.
Generally honest and fair people. You get the odd stray that will latch on and tell you a story of how much they like the English (Australian, american etc.
)and eventually will get to what they are after such as money to buy school books, or that their daughter / son collects foreign money (preferably notes!) or the old scam about not wanting money - but could you buy them some powdered milk. Politely tell them where to go and they go.
Nice enough beach, a few OK restaurants spread along the main road. Good for end of tour relaxation.
A small and nice town, suffering from a very busy coast road. All restaurants, hotels and shops are located along this road and the heavy traffic makes it unpleasant to walk along.
A walk inland immediately brings you to more calm roads through living areas or f.ex.to the Buddha temple.
The town is worth a visit to have a great beach holiday as well as good food and exciting nightlife.
Beaches is the main attraction at Hikkaduwa. The Children will particularly enjoy the fun filled town/ village.
If you travel a bit interior you can visit typical Sri Lankan villages. Highly recommended.
The guys on every road stare at you like animals. This was particularly uncomfortable for my fiancee.
They would stare at her until close up and then make stupid comments. The hotels are generally OK but very expensive, not value for money. OK experience but wouldn't stay here again.
I stayed beginning of October which is bit off season for surfing. So there was no crowd at all. After surfing, oil massage, Ayurveda relieved me from muscle stress.
In generally entire Hikkaduwa area is more popular because of long stretch of fantastic beach and corals arounds that area.
Unfortunately hikkaduwa city is still struggling to cater her customers at the standard her need
Its a nice city right next to the beach. Lots of places to eat and go surfing during the correct season.
Some night life and parties happening too
Come in July , you sure can not enjoy the sea, underwater etc but you can stay calm and and peaceful still can do and see a lot north to south and also back lands.
not the best point for travelling. stay in hotel. not going outside. then you have no problems. beach is ok but you can only swim in a special area not outside this hotel.
outside many local people looking for tourists and like you are going on tours, restaurants and others
hikkaduwa has a long beach and good to visit for night if youre not in surfing. There are some shops and restaurants.
Visit the TSUANMI MUSEUM for sure 2 km out of town its worth it !!!!!
When we were there (April) it was pretty quiet. The beach is lovely and the sunsets are breathtaking.
We didn't venture far from the hotel. We spent the morning in Galle then back to Hikkaduwa to enjoy the sun.
There may still be a lot of things that can be done to develop Hikkaduwa, but it sure is worth checking out the place if you want to have fun in the sun in a place that will not hurt your budget.
For me the one trip is not enough. Expect to be there again sometime soon for a longer period. I just fell in love with the vibe and pace of the town.
hikkaduwa is a beach town. the most interesting thing there is ocean and the beach. ther is also a lot of restaurant and stores.
but if you expect you will know sth about real sri lanka after being in hikkaduwa you will be disappointed. it's very touristic place.
One of the best locations in the enitre island for some good fun by the beach , the night life is excellent!!!
Seemed to be the big beach tourist area and has lots to do! Beach on North end was small and in spots waves were up to the buildings, but tons of restaurants/bars, even dance clubs, shopping/markets, late night food etc.
I saw a small nearby turtle rescue/breeding center, Tsunami memorial and even went out snorkeling on a catamaran, but the reef is pretty much dead here. I spent 2 nights here going down the coast to Galle and had a blast!
Great little town for endless beach fun and sunset drinks that keep you going long into the evening.
Very friendly people. Always welcoming and willing to chat. There is a party every night of the week in one of the beach bars.
Lots of places to eat and drink cheaply and well along the main strip, and try out some of the Ayuveda health spas. Quite a few tour operators and Scuba places too. The road is noisy with big buses passing through at night, so a room facing away from it would be an advantage, and the air can be quite polluted at times with all the tuk tuks. Be careful of where you step - my leg went down a hole in the pavement right outside the post box!
