We love the capital of Oman, its authentic Islamic feel combined with the sophistication of a World Capital and more than anything we love Omani people and their warm respectful, liberal welcome, a sharp contrast with Dubai for sure, the bustling New York of the Middle East!
Charming city with incredible hospitality. Muscat is a good base to do most things. A couple of things to note - buses that travel long distance only go twice a day and taxis are the only way to really travel around between suburbs or by car.
The roads are quite easy so hiring a car is a good option. Excursions tend to be quite expensive so just to bear that in mind.
Marvellous, mountainous, Muscat. Spread out and covered well by the Big Bus tour (recommended). Suggest a 2 day pass to fine tune the sightseeing as it is unlikely that hopping on and off in one day is sufficient.
Only Omani nationals are permitted to drive taxis. Thereby, you come face to face with a local as opposed to the several other expats who work and live in Muscat. I didn't ask about female taxi drivers, but I think Oman would at least consider as women can and do drive. The port area of Mutrah is not to be missed. The souq retains its old glorious features. Traders are gentle with their enquiries. There is much to see and enjoy. Politeness, smiles, calm, safe and interesting history. These are what I immediately recall about Muscat
There is a very long beach road from Qurum to Seeb, some 50km. Situated along this are some of the large international hotel chains but more importantly you discover the true beauty of the Oman coast-line.
Km's of beaches, fisherman with drag nets and open space to walk for hours.
- It is important to start the visit in the morning, because during the afternoon, the traffic jam starts from 16:00 hrs in the direction to Ruwi and Mutrah, from Gubrah or Airport area.
Or to stay in Mutrah or Ruwi itself. But the traffic jam exist of course in Ruwi itself also...
Muscat is a lovely city, but is spread out and needs time to explore. There are some great excursions from Muscat such as Nizwa and Jabrin, Wahiba Sand, Rustiq and Nahkl.
Perfect place to relax but you have to go outside Muscat city. Go to Shangrila or Le Sifah. Perfect place to stay close to the beach and doing all ocean sport activity.
Take the Big Bus Tour first and you will get to see all the most interesting places that you can visit afterwards at your leisure either by taxi or by hiring as car.
Muscat is a very nice city which has a combination of nature attractions (mountains, beaches, old souqs, and religious places), so we recommend it for every one.
So beautiful old areas with long cornich. old market with so many shops. good food. people are nice and polite ,different from some north african countries.
Muscat City is extremely spread out! It is not a walking city except for Mutrah/Old Muscat. All the 4 and 5 star hotels are quite a way from the Souk.
Taxis are plentiful but are unmetered.
Visit Muscat during winter season and you'll get to go to most of the places of interests and museums without having to worry about the scorching heat.
Plenty of interesting things to see and do. We hired a 4 x 4 & driver for 2 days to see some of the interior and stayed in a desert camp overnight.
The city is modern and clean with beautiful architecture. Shopping malls have something for everyone, with imported goods from all over the world.
Restaurants are plentiful with branches from most large chains. The souk offers the regional handicrafts and local foods which should not be missed. Public beaches are clean and inviting with clear water and beautiful sands. Taxis are easy to find and fares are reasonable. The summer heat and humidity is uncomfortable so if one has a choice, it is advisable to avoid the hotter months.
A very clean and friendly and clean town with lots to see. I loved seeing the Omanis ( male and female) jogging on, or just enjoying the beach.
Muscat is a very diverse city with it´s historic district and souqs, the modern Qurum district with nice beaches and lot´s of nightlife etc.
I would recommend staying 2 to 3 nights. There are also a lot of options for day trips outside of Muscat.
Muscat is the capital city of Sultanate of Oman. One of the rich countries in middle east. Also have traditional culture and amazing places.
A lovely city to visit with plenty of activities to see. When planning a stay the location is very important as Muscat is very spread out.
The best city we've visited in the Middle East. Very friendly people. Mountains and sea, not just desert and high rise building sites.
Interesting places to visit, all close. Don't go after April since it's much too hot and places start closing down for the season.
Fantastic settings on the foothills. Great Ocean and mountain views due to restrictions on building high rise structures in the city.
Quiet and calm, with a laid back attitude. Great basecamp for nearby fort and mountain safaris and beaches, and Camel and Ostrich farms. Great Indian and Arabic food available. Fairly good nightlife.
Beautiful city, pleasant people, Looks more like a mountainous town than a metropolitan but all modern amenities are available.
Compared to Dubai, Muscat is a village-like capitol. Friendly and welcoming but no skyscrapers, traffic and vibrant nightlife.
Excellent for a few days off from the busy Dubai craziness.
its very nice quite city, has many places to be visited , cultural places , good beaches, mountaines (wadi) and diving options.
Muscat is the nicest of any cities in the Middle East. If all of the ME would be run like Oman, the place would be paradise.
Perfect for holidays relaxing. Sitting by the pool or on the beach for sun tanning or boating along coasts and arabian sea.
Muscat is nice place for relaxation and it was pleasant stay in muscat mandi is very tasty in muscat and good price.
I just love this place. 10 pm all shops will close even souq.
wonderful town, excellent shopping , citizens are very polite and friendly. Women can walk alone with no nuisance.
Muscat is a small country BUT the people are friendly and polite. All the places are very clean and arranged.
Nature is abundant and very nice to walk along the Corniche.
Need to take a taxi for transportation. Always has to negotiate with the driver before getting into the taxi.
Need to Bargain. It would be simpler if there is a meter in the taxi. Generally, the taxi drivers are very friendly and helpful.
Beautiful city of muscat is engulfed among mountains and beaches. Seems like a white oasis.. so beautiful.
