More about Sakon Nakhon

Sakon Nakhon is the capital of Northeastern Thailand’s distinctive Isaan region, with a history dating back to thousands of years in the past. The vast history of this town is evident in the remnants of the Khmer temples that date back to the 11th century, as well as the legacy of the Laotian influence from years past.

Each year in October, at the end of the annual period of Buddhist Lent, Sakon Nakhon is home to the Wax Castle Parade, when many communities from around the region exhibit stunning replicas and models of Buddhist temples made entirely out of wax. This event usually draws a large number of visitors, most of whom are other Thais from surrounding areas. It’s a very unique and interesting event, and one that should not be missed if possible.

Within the historic Ban That village, there are many temples and structures that bring the history of this town into clearer view, and one such structure is the temple of Wat Phra That Narai Cheng Weng. Featuring Khmer-style stupas and interesting design that combines the region’s Thai and Khmer influences, this temple is one of the more interesting ones in the city. Located within the city and often a popular destination for locals to relax at the end of the day, Nong Han Lake is a beautiful place that is easily accessible. It’s also possible to take the relaxation a step further by hiring a boat to reach one of its isles, perfect for a day of slow-paced relaxation.
