More about Auckland City Center

Auckland city center is a lively place to visit. Queen Street runs through the center of the district, from the outer highway almost all the way to Quay Street. The grid of side streets that breaks from Queen Street is where most of the hotels in the city center are concentrated.

Auckland was capital of New Zealand for a time, and the Old Government House has become part of Auckland University Campus. Today, the city center still has its share of Edwardian and Victorian architecture along with museums and performance-arts venues like the Aotea Centre. Even so, it’s better known as the city’s central business district.

Some of the best accommodation in the city center is on Karangahape Road, famous for the cafés, boutique shops and clubs found there. This is where leisure tourists in Auckland spend most of their time. The road runs perpendicular to Queen Street and is especially well-known for its exciting nightlife. The liveliest time to visit Karangahape Road is during the annual St Patrick’s Festival, when bars and pubs stay open late and the central business district buzzes with activity.

Away from the more commercial attractions is Albert Park, which offers a quiet escape within the city center. It’s joined by the Metropolis complex, with high-rise apartments and hotel rooms that enjoy a view over Grafton Gully and Grafton Bridge. The Metropolis and environs are a popular base for business travelers, retirees and anyone else in Auckland on a medium- to long-stay basis.
