Alor Setar is growing town with lots of history. The birth place of our famous ex Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed.
It is located between Penang Island , Perlis and Thailand. Proximity to the beautiful Langkawi Island, and Thailand make it very convenient to move between these places for leisure and entertainment whilst you can stay back and relax peacefully in Alor Star. The cost of living is still low. You may find local produce and handicrafts at reasonable price. To move around is easy. In town itself you may walk and moving away from town centre you may take bus or taxi. There are many shopping complexes offering local items and branded stuffs. If you want to watch movies, there are modern cinemas screening the latest films. Golfers will find Alor Setar offering fantastic golf courses. Golf courses can be found throughout the State. Beach lovers , there are many beautiful beaches. Those who love natures, they will find there are a few interesting caves, mountains and virgin forests to explore.
The city is surrounded by padi fields. They provide great scenery when they turn yellow, ready for harvesting.
Nice city, but not much to look around, 2 days is enough, however if you like country site, it will be wounderful.
you could spent day in nice paddy field which especially during early season.
Alor Setar normally we will shop at Pekan Rabu famous with local food and local hand craft goods. Place to visit - Alor Setae Tower.
Food - Lacal Laksa, cendol and rojak is my favourite food.
Close to Langkawi or can be considered a gateway from Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis. Can also consider making a trip to the southern towns of Thailand, Wang Lelian, Padang Besar, Danok or Hadyai.
Visit Pekan Rabu for local produce...
A transit town if you want to go to Langkawi Island, the food and don't forget to stop by the Pekan Rabu.
Alor Star is relatively dull compare to other cities like Taiping,Ipoh,Kuching and others. Very few attractions that are advisable to visit.

I was with my European friend so most of them think I am not local .
Quiet place, relax and relief. Food is nice over here. Pay a visit to alor setar if u are so sick with busy city life.
Alor Setar is a quiet country town that is very family oriented, but unfortunately doesn't offer much to the tourist.
Apart from a few nice restaurants and and food courts there is not much else to interest the tourist. It is close to the ferry for Langkawi if you want to soak up some country town culture before going to the island for a few days.
Good food but you need a car to travel for each location that food available. there are several museum available for visit.

When traveling around the city center, be reminded about parking issues. Traffics aren't like what they used to be.
The city is undergoing major 'upgrading'. Dining experience is something one should not miss when in Alor Setar.
the city centre is very good but i was well away with only taxi transport no public bus from leverage hotel
A very laid back city. It is very relaxing to walk around the city. Things seemed to beless hurried here compared to other cities in Malaysia.
Shopping for local products can be done at pekan Rabu.
For the Muslims, a visit to Al Bulkhari mosque. There's also Alor Setar tower where one can see almost all of Kedah.
