Traveler impressions of Alor Setar

More about Alor Setar

Alor Setar is one of the richest cities in Malaysia, and the capital city of the state of Kedah of Peninsular Malaysia. The city is easily accessed by bus, train, car, or via Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, which serves regular domestic flights mainly from Kuala Lumpur. This is often the easiest method for international travelers who can easily transfer from Kuala Lumpur straight to Alor Setar.

Although Alor Setar is much more developed than most smaller cities in Malaysia, it’s still possible to get outside the city center and enjoy the traditional rice plantations. If unable to get to the outskirts of town to see the rice paddies, make a trip to the Padi Museum and learn all about rice and how it’s grown in this region. It’s an interesting and informative museum, and an especially great destination for those traveling with children.

While exploring the city and observing how the locals interact with each other in the markets and small gatherings around town, it’s also a great idea to see some of Alor Setar’s historic and cultural architecture, of which there are several to choose. While Zahir State Mosque is the biggest and most impressive mosque, Wat Nikrodharam Buddhist Temple is a massive, Thai-style Buddhist temple that is absolutely a must-see for anyone visiting this city.
