Traveler impressions of Balikpapan

More about Balikpapan

Located in the East Kalimantan region of Indonesia, Balikpapan is a small coastal city with a huge economy, serving as the international headquarters for major oil and mining corporations. The city is served by Sepinggan Airport, or most commonly by local buses from the major cities arriving at Balikpapan Permai Bus Terminal.

Hotels in Balikpapan are spread out throughout the city, offering a large selection of accommodations spread out moderately evenly, with a higher concentration being in the city center. The city center is also home to the shopping centers such as Balikpapan Plaza.

Of course, one of the best reasons for visiting a coastal city is the opportunity for relaxing at the beaches, or taking part in the watersports that area often popular among vacation-goers. Balikpapan is not without its fair share of beaches, the most popular ones being scattered along the southwest coastline. Nature lovers will also enjoy a tour of the Orangutan Sanctuary, which allows these rescued animals to resume their lives in their natural habitat.

There’s much more to see and experience in Balikpapan, which offers visitors a nice blend of a commercial city with nice beaches and islands within easy reach. Find out where the remaining attractions and hotels of Balikpapan are located by exploring the interactive map on this page.
