More about Bukittinggi
Bukittinggi exhibits a fair share of Dutch colonial architecture from its time known as Fort de Kock. The fort itself, more an outpost tower, is located in a park that offers panoramic views of the town. The Dutch-built Jam Gadang clock tower is considered a centerpiece of the city, overlooking the town square and located near the tourist markets of Pasar Atas and Pasar Bawah. The Japanese Caves, a network of underground bunkers and tunnels built during World War II, as well as Limpapeh Bridge and Bukittinggi Zoo are popular stops for those experiencing the town.
On the natural side, Panorama Park boasts beautiful scenery and the Sianok Canyon and Tabiang Takuruang. The city is also surrounded by three volcanos, providing incredible backdrops against the fertile valleys. Hotels in Bukittinggi are generally located in the city center and along the main roads, with budget accommodation easy to find and luxury properties offering a more tasteful stay.
