This is, perhaps, the most beautiful colonial city in Mexico; spread across steep hills it's a town of brightly painted houses, built along narrow, stone-paved alleys.
The central district has fine churches and public buildings. Guanajuato has a thriving cultural life, with three well-attended theatres, and a very popular classical music programme that runs throughout the summer. Lots of small museums including Diego Rivera's house.
