"What a positive surprise was! At first sight the frontage and entrance to the hotel was disappointing, once we entered the front of the hotel from the hotel parking area it was fantastic. Right on the beach with the sea directly in front made for a lovely and peaceful visit. The rooms were large and clean, the restaurant looking directly onto the beach was great and all staff we met were lovely and friendly. Just what you need after a long drive. Hokitika also offers wonderful craft shops. One of the best stays over 10 days in South Island."

"The Pioneer Hotel is a combination hotel/bar and check-in is at the bar in the front of the hotel. The gentleman operating the hotel wasn't immediately present, and it wasn't immediately clear where to go, but one of the customers went to get him and everything else about the stay was smooth. Bathrooms and showers are shared, but there are two each which was enough for the guests present (I did not need to wait at all when I needed a shower or toilet), and there is a refrigerator for public use. The beds were comfortable and small TVs were present in every room. The hotel is in a quiet area of the quiet town and the bar shut down around 8pm, but even when it was open, there was no noise at all in the hotel side. There is plenty of street parking on the side of the hotel. I would recommend this place to anyone seeking a comfortable budget stay in Hokitika."

"This absolutely beautifully restored fire station was amazing! Our apartment was very large and comfortable, newly remodeled, and spotlessly clean. The decor was very thoughtful and modern, but also included many antiques from fire stations, fire equipment, etc. The apartment had a mini kitchen with a microwave and small fridge, but no hot plate or stove to cook on. There was no elevator, so if you have mobility issues, book an apartment on the first floor. The location is perfect in downtown. Only a few blocks from the beach, and plenty of stores, pubs, and restaurants in easy walking distance. It was a great value and we would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to our friends "

"Clean, central, quiet and spacious enough for a couple with a young baby. Perhaps an unusual setup with the accommodation staff also running the bar/cafe but help was on hand quickly enough and when we had a problem with our room (the last person had left the heater on full meaning the room was a sauna) we got good service in sorting it out swiftly. WiFi at an additional cost is a little disappointing but you won’t find a much better location for the price."
