Most travellers stop for a day to visit the Fort and the end of "the" Great Wall. Most of these travellers are poorly mannered at best.
The fort and wall are reconstructed but we at least found the views from on top to be beautiful. We found the bus drivers kind and helpful but most of the city's population would do as in many similar sized remote towns in China: smile while they insult you and assume you don't understand. We did have a couple of great nights with both locals and travellers in the night market's xiaokaos, even though I got food poisoning. TIPS: you can get very cheap local buses to/from both the fort (no 6) and old train station (many) so you can avoid the taxi touts massive rip-off prices.
