Overall, the Pullman Kaifeng is a lovely place to stay with friendly and helpful staff, clean and spacious rooms and a brilliant breakfast buffet. The location is good although the grounds of the hotel are so massive that it takes a good ten minutes to walk to the road! This however, is not a deterrent as there are hotel owned golf buggies and taxis are easy to get. My only 2 gripes are to do with the placement of the lifts and the design of the bathrooms. The lifts - the hotel is only 2 stories so it's easy to walk up and down the stairs however, when you need to use the lift for luggage etc it's not so easy to find and when you do find it, it feels like you're accessing the staff entrance! The bathrooms - they're a great size however, the shower/bath recess is a good two huge steps down into a deep tub. Very contemporary in design but not so practical for elderly people or kids as you do need to hang onto a rail to get in! Still, a nice hotel in a fun city.

Pros: great location for the foodie. Right next to the bell tower, which has a food night market. Lots of restaurants downstairs. Plenty of public transport nearby. Close to lots of tourist sites. Cons: Dirty old hotel. Note agoda location was not right using the directions button and Baidu. Copy the chinese name into the search field in baidu and it comes to right spo...

Staff that checked us in were not that helpful. We booked 2 nights and the bathroom was dirty and smelt bad. Complained about it. Asked to change room. Got told the hotel was booked out although agoda showed otherwise. They cleaned the bathroom waited over half an hour for the receptionist to come back to give us the all clear only to find discover she'd gone. There are other nicer hotels in the area. I recommend going to one of the instead.

My room was very comfortable and everything functioned properly (TV, shower, outlets). The front desk staff were especially helpful. When I needed a taxi, they took me out to the street, flagged one down and told the driver where to take me. They even found out the price. We liked the city of Kaifeng, but staying at the New Century Kaifeng Grand Hotel surely helped us in that appraisal! Our son had booked rooms for us at a university hotel in the city, but those rooms had not been cleaned properly in a long time, so we quickly got on to the Agoda Website and re-booked the New Century. Our son had booked rooms for us at a university hotel in the city, but those rooms had not been cleaned properly in a long time, so we quickly got on to the Agoda Website and re-booked the New Century. The hotel is luxurious and very comfortable. English is not widely spoken by staff there, but enough to get by. Taxis into town (about 15-20 minutes away) were cheap and easy to get. Would highly recommend this hotel.

We're not complaining about hard mattresses, long waits for hot water or bed linens not being changed daily. It's a hostel, it's China and we know what to expect. Nevertheless, when we stayed in a twin room (we booked a double but had to change as the bed was broken) at Kaifeng International Youth Hostel, it failed to please us in many ways! The place is rather dirty,...

Nevertheless, when we stayed in a twin room (we booked a double but had to change as the bed was broken) at Kaifeng International Youth Hostel, it failed to please us in many ways! The place is rather dirty, starting from the yard which is covered in empty beer bottles and other rubbish, to the rooms (when did they last clean under the beds?), the showers... as well as the glasses for our beer and the cutlery we received at breakfast. And the laundry room (which we didn't use) and the public toilet outside the common room/bar are a disgrace. They claim the place was newly opened in 2011 but we wonder how you can run down a place so fast, copper rust on the shower head, broken beds and the shambles in the yard (which could in theory be a nice place to hang out). The common room/bar lacks charm and is mostly frequented by the inattentive staff, chatting about. Why they had the AC switched off with 40°C outside remains a mystery to us, as well as the fact, that they only switched the fridge on, when we asked for cold beer. When asked for help though, the staff are friendly and helpful, but they lack proper management who tells/teaches them, to see what's to do (and there is plenty). Would we stay there again? No, thank you.

We enjoyed our stay at the Zhongzhou especially as Kaifeng was bathed in colour from the Chrysanthemum Festival. Lots to see in two days and the city was more natural than other tourist spots. The bonus was the evening restaurant market opposite the hotel with 75 eating outlets and great beer - something lacking generally in China!

Beware, the staff at this hotel speaks little English. Looks like a nice hotel but maintenance of facilities leaves much to be desired. Building has at times an "old smell" which is annoying. The light switch in the bathroom had an adhesive residue that had darkened, probably due to dirt being stuck to it over time. Also, it appeared that the glass shower doors had not...

The light switch in the bathroom had an adhesive residue that had darkened, probably due to dirt being stuck to it over time. Also, it appeared that the glass shower doors had not been properly cleaned for awhile as it had smudges and smears from hard water deposits and peoples hand prints. Breakfast is strictly Chinese--no western breakfast foods. Additionally, the hotel staff would not call a taxi for me when I checked out. It was raining out, I had a suitcase with me and they still would not call a cab and escorted me to the street and demonstrated how to flag down a cab. Kaifeng does not have the greatest taxi service in the first place making it seem ridiculous that the staff could not make a single phone call for the only foreigner in their hotel. The housekeepers were nice and conscientious.
