Sarakham is a very small town, but it has its attractions from a vibrant night market, to many outside restaurants near the hotel, and two night clubs also near the hotel.
The best way to reach the city is by bus. I came from Khon Kaen, which was about a one hour trip. Near the city are a dinosaur museum and historic wats. If you like Thai music, you will discover an excellent store a short walk from the bus station (baw khaw saw).
It's peaceful and real countryside. People are nice and friendly. I'm so impressive of their foods if you could try something new so just go there.
Mahasarakham is basically an educational centre, it is highly respected throughout Thailand as such and has far too many schools and universities to count.
Getting around especially during a school term is very difficult during school starting and finishing (between 7 and 8.30 am and also from 3 to 4.30 pm). The roads are highly congested and controlled on every junction by traffic police. Other than a learning centre there is very little for the tourist to do. We found one decent shopping centre called SerimThai but even the movies on offer at the incorporated Cinema complex were Thai only - no english subtitles available.
