Traveler impressions of Parapat

More about Parapat

On the shores of Lake Toba is the town of Parapat. It serves as the gateway to Lake Toba and its island of Samosir. Parapat is a 4-hour bus ride from Medan and Berastagi and a 6-hour bus ride from Sibola. Trains from Medan stop at Pematangsiantar which is 50km north of Parapat. A bus or taxi ride from there will take about one or two hours.

Natural splendors and the recreation offered by the volcanic lake dominate the Parapat experience. Water scooters and speed boat rides make for some fun in the sun while still enjoying the cool climate of the area. Some true adrenaline-pumping activities can be had while rafting on the Asahan River. This 150km stretch offers a challenging course for true whitewater rafting enthusiasts. If using Parapat as a base for exploration, trips from the ferry port to the island towns of Tomok and Tuktuk are sure to be in order. Here are sites such as the stone sarcophagus of chief Sidabutar as well as the villages of Ambarita and Simanindo.
