More about Pekalongan

On the northern coast of the Central Java province and less than 100km west of the capital city of Semarang, Pekalongan is a quiet little port city. It is known for its colorful art of batik. This is a traditional Indonesian fabric masterpiece that was recognized by UNESCO as an ‘intangible cultural heritage of humanity’. International travelers looking to reach this destination are welcomed via the Achmad Yani International Airport in Semarang with bus and train lines making the final leg of the journey.

Pekalongan offers the exploration of the batik craft as well as the mix of cultures that make up the city. The Batik Museum is a focalized point where you can see batik collections and antique pieces in the former City Hall. Cultural influences can be seen in the craft, with designs featuring flora and fauna being quite popular with the Peranakan Chinese. The city of Pekalongan also features the Chinese, Arabian, and European influences. The north of the city is dotted with terraced houses and old shrines, forming the city’s Chinatown along the lanes of Jalan Blimbing. The distinct character of the Arab quarters can be visited at Jalan Platiunus and the streets leading away from it. Not far from here is the batik market and its wide variety of batik showcasing Indian, Japanese, Dutch, and Arabian influences.

Exploring the art and culture of Pekalongan is easy with accommodation catering to both the backpacker and the more casual traveler. Be sure to check out the interactive map of Pekalongan for information on hotel locations, attractions, and must-see destinations.
