More about Pietermaritzburg

Noted for its history and architecture, Pietermaritzburg is the capital of Kwazulu-Natal and set in the center of the province. The city is easy to reach by road for those looking to take a road trip, but flights are regularly serviced from Johannesburg at Pietermaritzburg Airport. If visiting other parts of South Africa and not looking to get a rental, intercity trains or bus services from other major cities make for viable options. To get around Pietermaritzburg, a rental car is strongly advised for those not looking to walk a few kilometers to check out sites.

Pietermaritzburg provides a nice balance between nature and city living. Queen Elizabeth Park is host to the friendlier of Africa’s wildlife, providing an opportunity to stroll like never before. In Mayor’s Walk is the KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Gardens which could be well worth a day’s visit. In the city business district are both sites and nightlife. The City Hall is an impressive red brick building and the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Clubs, bars, and sports club offer nighttime entertainment with Tiger Tiger being one of the most popular. Tatham Art Gallery and Voortrekker Museum are options for a more cultural experience.
