there are some gems here but in order to find them you have to pass through a seedy underbelly. be prepared.
No supermarkets in the center, just casino's and snackbars. There's a nice river and some nice bars. That's it for Reno, sorry.
Reno is a weird town. It's just the strip of a few blocks and half a dozen casinos/resorts, and then mostly suburbia for a few miles around.
There's a river and a lake in the middle of town that makes for a nice walk. It's also kind of scuzzy in a way that's hard to avoid completely, but it's not that dangerous.
The recession has hit Reno hard. The past few years we have noticed fewer and fewer relaxed happy people and more and more kind of sad and desperate locals.
On our most recent trip we found a full heroin kit (needles, drugs and all) sitting on a pool table in the casino. Not good. Probably done with the Reno scene. Kind of sad since that is where we spent a few nights on our honeymoon 20 years ago.
Fairly small downtown, all easily walkable. Several good breweries. Good road systems for exploring surrounding area.
